**Title**:Pathologist - Diagnostic Genetics

**Purpose of Position**:
The purpose of this position is to provide a laboratory and consultative service in Diagnostic
Genetics within LabPlus and for the Auckland District Health Board. The position will provide clinical
liaison between the clinical services using the Diagnostic Genetics Service

**Key accountabilities:
**1. Clinical**:

- To liaise with the diagnostic genetic registrar(s), clinical scientists and scientific staff

and ward clinical staff about clinical problems to co-ordinate patient testing and management.**
- Maintain a relationship with clinical and technical heads of department in the day

to day operation of the laboratory and so ensure a functional, cost-effective
department.
- To review and select tests and assess and provide treatment advice for referred

patients.
- To authorise results and assist with updating the reporting format in the department.
- To attend clinical meetings and participate in multidisciplinary meetings.
- To advise the Service Clinical Director of LabPlus on priorities and changing needs in the

the practice of diagnostic genetics
- To work in partnership with Clinical Genetics and Oncology Lead Clinicians in

developing, implementing and maintaining a joint strategy and service model that
meet clinical need.

**2. Medical Audit**
- To maintain current in the CPD Recertification Programme for the Royal College of Pathologists

Australasia.
- To participate in quality assurance programmes where relevant to the practice of

Pathology.

**3. Teaching/ Training**
- Co-ordinate the Pathology Registrar Training in accordance with the requirements of Australasia
- To assist with the training of scientific staff when required.
- To teach other hospital members/ groups as requested.
- To teach medical and paramedical students according to the agreement between

Auckland District Health Board and Auckland University as requested and agreed.
- To participate in advisory committees and policy formulation, including advising

managers on clinical matters.

**4. Research and Development**:

- To participate in continuing medical education activities including clinically based
- research and development activities and present findings at appropriate venues.- To assist with the development of techniques in conjunction with scientific staff.
- To foster an environment conducive to research and development within the

department and to assist such activities undertaken by department staff.
- To use departmental material appropriately for research and development.

**5. Career Development and Continuing Education**:

- To continue self-education through attendance at relevant conferences/

seminars/ courses and by appropriate reading.
- To use CME funding appropriately as allocated.
- To participate actively in local education and review meetings.

**6. Work Commitments
- Hours of work per week as agreed with Service Clinical Director
