Become the embedded firmware expert
- Turn a homegrown invention into scalable reality
- Grow with a business with literally limitless potential
Our client is looking to create sustainable and scalable space exploration technology, we are excited about their future, and are super proud to be supporting them to scale
Currently in start-up phase, the company is working hard in R&D and prototyping as they work to develop their technology into full-scale production and they are now seeking an Embedded Firmware Engineer to join their growing team.
**The role**
Working in a relatively flat structure, you will be required to have a level of flexibility in getting involved where required (such is life in a start up environment) in different priorities and initiatives, whilst taking ownership (including design, implement, test, document, and support) of firmware projects that enable research, production, and mission activities.
Part of this work will be developing firmware requirements in coordination with systems engineering, hardware engineering, software engineering and subsystem owners. You will be responsible for producing, maintaining, and executing unit and integration tests relating to your firmware project.
**Your work will include**
- Breaking down complex technical challenges to drive ownership of your firmware projects
- Undertaking verification testing and writing supporting documentation
- Utilising your strong knowledge of modern C++ in an embedded environment
- Producing complex firmware for embedded, including debugging and testing, both with/without a real-time operating system.
- Developing firmware requirements in coordination with systems, software and hardware engineering, and subsystem owners.
As the business moves at pace, you too will be expected to move quickly, adapt to continual change, and work in an agile way to iterate continuous improvements to your part of the puzzle. You will enjoy seeing the improvements in the mission from your own individual efforts, and you'll thrive in an environment that requires you to constantly challenge yourself, and solve new problems, which in some cases have not yet been realised.
Other key characteristics that will enable you to thrive include:
- Ideally a tertiary engineering qualification with Honours. Other tertiary qualifications may be considered.
- A proven ability to produce complex firmware
- Strong knowledge of modern C, C++, Java, Rust, Python.
- Strong knowledge of microprocessors, such as MSP430, Cortex M4, and their associated tools, IDE and debuggers.
- Basic knowledge of Git, and Agile (preferably Scrum).
- Familiar with: GCC in an embedded context; developing using Windows and Ubuntu; CMake and / or Gradle build systems; Bluetooth technology.
- A general knowledge of the impacts of space environment on software requirements (reliability, maintenance, safety, radiation resistance).
- Interest in satellite design, attitude determination and control, FGPAs.
Whilst there is not an expectation for you be an absolute expert, you will thrive if you're the type that enjoys trying new things, failing fast, and asking questions. You will also recognise the value of having alternative skill sets and inquisitive brains around you.
**In return**:
You will be working for a company that LOVE what they do. You can anticipate being in a role you will love too
As a start-up organisation you can expect to work with plenty of independence to grow and own your area, and become the expert. You’ll have a large and rewarding part to play. As this is a hands-on role, generally speaking this is a site-based role: options for WFH are limited.
However you won't be expected to work typical "Start-Up" hours. This business works efficiently and avoids bureaucracy at all costs You'll be paid to market expectations, conditional on your level of experience.
If this sounds like you please
