Role Title: Executive Director Reports To: Chairperson/s of the Board of the Aotearoa Food Rescue Alliance (AFRA) Direct Reports: Communications Lead, Data Lead, Contractors Functional Relationships: Board Co-Chairs, AFRA Members, Strategic Partners, Funders, Government and Sector Representatives, Media Primary Purpose of Role: The Executive Director (ED) leads the Aotearoa Food Rescue Alliance to achieve its mission of reducing food waste and alleviating food insecurity across New Zealand. The ED collaborates closely with members, stakeholders, and strategic partners to ensure that activities align with AFRA’s overarching mission and vision, fostering collective impact across the sector. The ED is responsible for implementing and delivering the organisation’s strategy as agreed to by the members, including Hinepūtehue – mai te Kākano ki te Hua – the Māori Strategy. Building and maintaining collaborative partnerships, and ensuring operational and financial sustainability. As the face of AFRA, the ED will advocate for the food rescue sector and foster innovation, best practice, and collaboration among members and stakeholders. Key Result Areas, Critical Tasks and Key Performance Indicators Strategic Leadership Critical Tasks: · Act as a spokesperson for the food rescue sector, representing AFRA in media, and public forums. · Maintain and foster effective relationships with members, stakeholders, and strategic partners. · Develop and promote a high trust organisational culture aligned with AFRA’s mission and values. · Ensure that resources are available to achieve strategic goals. Key Performance Indicators: ● High visibility and positive representation of AFRA in media and key forums. ● Feedback from members and stakeholders on leadership effectiveness. Strategy Development, Annual Planning, and Reporting Critical Tasks: ● Lead and Implement AFRA’s strategic plan with input from the Board. ● Prepare annual business plans and budgets aligned with strategic objectives. ● Provide the Board with regular updates on strategic progress and emerging opportunities or risks. Key Performance Indicators: ● Strategic and business plans approved by the Board. ● Timely and accurate reporting to the Board. ● Proactive identification of risks and opportunities. Operational Management Critical Tasks: · Oversee the day-to-day operations of AFRA and ensure the delivery of high-quality programmes and services. · Oversight of regional and National hui. · Implement processes for monitoring and evaluating programme effectiveness. · Ensure adherence to all applicable policies and regulations. · Lead special projects to advance AFRA’s objectives. Key Performance Indicators: · High-quality services delivered on time and within budget. · Programme evaluations demonstrate impact and alignment with strategic goals. · Delivery of Regional and National hui. Financial Management Critical Tasks: ● Develop and manage AFRA’s annual budget in collaboration with the Board. ● Ensure sound financial practices and compliance with statutory requirements. ● Lead efforts to diversify and build sustainable revenue streams for AFRA to continue. Key Performance Indicators: ● Annual budget approved and adhered to. ● Monthly financial reporting is accurate and timely. ● Revenue diversification targets met. Advocacy and Sector Leadership Critical Tasks: ● Advocate for the food rescue sector with government, funders, and other stakeholders. ● Develop and lead shared policy submissions and sector-wide initiatives. ● Build and maintain relationships with strategic partners to advance AFRA’s mission. Key Performance Indicators: · Positive feedback from advocacy efforts. · Increased sector alignment on policy and practice. · Growth in partnerships and collaborations. · Food Secure Communities Funding or similar is continued and/or increased. People Management Critical Tasks: · Lead, manage, and develop staff and contractors. · Foster an organisational culture that aligns with AFRA's values. · Ensure effective recruitment, retention, and succession planning. · Ensure staff’s health and wellbeing are looked after. Key Performance Indicators: ● High staff engagement and retention. ● Organisational culture aligned with AFRA’s values. ● Recruitment and development processes meet organisational needs. Governance Support Critical Tasks: ● Provide administrative support and timely reporting to the Board. ● Ensure “no surprises” communication with the Co-Chairs and Board Members. Key Performance Indicators: ● Board receives timely, accurate, and transparent updates. ● Board members express confidence in the quality of governance support. Experience and Competencies Experience: ● Proven leadership and management experience, ideally in the for-purpose or collaborative sector. ● Experience in advocacy and relationship management preferably at a national level. ● Understanding of government. ● Familiarity with food systems, environmental sustainability, or community development is an advantage. Competencies: ● Strategic and visionary thinker with strong analytical skills. ● Highly effective communicator with the ability to engage diverse audiences. ● Skilled in building relationships and networks across sectors and cultures. ● Proven financial management expertise. ● Strong self-management and ability to operate independently. ● Empathy and understanding of cultural diversity, particularly Te Ao Māori. Conditions of Employment Fixed Term Contract: This role is offered as a 12 month fixed-term position due to current funding arrangements. Should further funding be secured, there may be an opportunity to transition to a permanent role. Location & Travel: National role required to work remotely. Travel required for stakeholder and member engagement and attendance at regional and national hui. Hours: Full-time (37.5 hours per week) with occasional evening or weekend commitments. Negotiable to be between 32-37.5 for the right candidate. Remuneration: $110,000-$130,000 depending on experience (37.5 hours per week) Superannuation: Employer to match contributions to Kiwi Saver or other superannuation scheme up to 3% of salary.
