Wellington, Wellington, New Zealand Waste Management NZ Limited Full time

At WM New Zealand, we're not just a company — we're driving the future of sustainability. As New Zealand's largest composter, leading waste-to-energy provider, and owner of the country's largest commercial electric fleet, we are transforming how waste is redirected, neutralized, and repurposed. Powered by electricity generated from waste, we're proud to lead the way in innovative waste management solutions and are excited to continue growing and evolving in the new year.

Job Description

2025 is well underway and it's the perfect time to set new goals and challenge yourself in a role that makes a difference. We're looking for a highly skilled and passionate HSEQ Advisor to join our Corporate HSEQ team to provide support for the Divisional HSEQ Partner. Based in Seaview, Wellington, this is your chance to be a key player in shaping the future of waste management, health, safety, environmental practices, and quality excellence.

In this vital role, you'll provide expert HSEQ support to the Divisional Partner, ensuring our Lower North Island operations meet and exceed national and local compliance requirements, while actively managing risk and fostering a safe and environmentally responsible culture.

What You'll Do

  • Develop & Maintain: Implement HSEQ policies, procedures, and management systems to ensure compliance and best practices across all sites.
  • Audit & Assess: Conduct audits, inspections, and risk assessments to identify hazards and drive continuous improvement.
  • Train & Advise: Deliver training and provide expert guidance to all employees, championing a culture of safety and responsibility.
  • Investigate & Improve: Lead investigations into incidents and near-misses, providing actionable recommendations to prevent recurrence.
  • Report & Analyse: Monitor HSEQ performance, prepare insightful reports, and drive data-backed decisions with leadership.
  • Collaborate & Influence: Work cross-functionally to integrate HSEQ considerations into daily operations and strategic decision-making.
  • Stay Ahead: Keep up with evolving regulations and standards, ensuring WM New Zealand remains a leader in HSEQ compliance.
Qualifications

What We're Looking For

  • A Tertiary Qualification (Degree or above) in H&S or Environmental Science.
  • 3-5 years of experience in a similar HSE role (preferably within the waste management or related industry).
  • A strong background in risk management and the ability to manage change effectively.
  • In-depth knowledge of HSE, ACC, and HSNO legislation and standards.
  • Familiarity with Integrated Management Systems (ISO 9001, 14001, 45001).
  • Strong communication and presentation skills — able to engage and influence at all levels.
  • A keen eye for detail with excellent analytical, conceptual, and research skills.
  • Great time management and the ability to self-manage in a fast-paced environment.
  • Legally entitled to work in New Zealand.
