Analysts/Senior Analysts, Macroeconomic and Fiscal Policy

Have you got what it takes to shape Aotearoa New Zealand's tomorrow?

We are recruiting for Analysts and Senior Analysts to work on interesting and challenging policy projects in our Macroeconomic and Fiscal Policy team. Joining our team will see you working in a supportive and collaborative team environment, advancing your skills and career, while shaping a better tomorrow for all New Zealanders.

At Te Tai Ōhanga The Treasury we're creating a better future for New Zealand and everyone who calls our amazing country home. We're the Government's economic and financial advisor, working hard to raise the standard of living for everyone in Aotearoa, now and in the future.

Our talented people bring their diverse backgrounds and experiences to tackling New Zealand's biggest and most inter-connected issues. Every day, they are influencing, advising, and supporting government decision-makers to shape our country's collective tomorrow.

We have openings for a mix of Analysts and Senior Analysts to join us on a permanent or fixed-term basis. Two of these roles will be providing parental leave cover through to February 2026 and May 2026.

Our team is responsible for advising the Government on the fiscal strategy and New Zealand's macroeconomic policy frameworks. This includes a mix of fast-paced and high-profile policy advice through the Budget process or in response to new developments and shocks, as well as long-term stewardship work.

These roles will lead or contribute to multiple projects, tailored to the skills and interests of successful applicants. You will have a varied and challenging work programme, with regular exposure to and engagement with senior leadership and plenty of opportunities to learn and develop on the job.

Across all roles, we are seeking people with:

  • An interest in what's happening in the macroeconomy - an economics background is advantageous but is not essential.
  • Critical thinking and strong analytical ability.
  • Enthusiasm for developing policy analysis skills in a new area.
  • Well-developed written and verbal communication skills with the ability to communicate complex issues and concepts clearly and succinctly.
  • Strong relationship building skills and the ability to establish trust and influence.
  • An ability to operate in a fast-paced and dynamic environment.
  • An ability to work with others to develop solutions to complex problems.
  • An inclusive, team-player attitude.

As a signal, we would expect individuals applying for the analyst roles to have upwards of 2 years' relevant experience in the public sector or elsewhere, and people applying for the senior analyst roles to have at least 5 years' experience. We also expect our senior analysts to have experience in leading projects and delivering through others (e.g. overseeing and coaching other team members).

We are committed to employing people with a wide range of academic, cultural and social backgrounds and experiences, who represent the New Zealand community we serve.

The wharenui, at the heart of our workplace, embodies our commitment to diversity and making this an inclusive place that will welcome the unique experiences and perspectives you bring to our collaborative team culture.
