Medical Officer Research & Investigation - Liver Transplant Research (Fixed Term) at Te Whatu Ora - Health New Zealand Te Toka Tumai Auckland, Auckland
  • 12-month Fixed term opportunity available at Liver Research Unit, Te Toka Tumai- Auckland

Te whiwhinga mahi| The Opportunity

A fixed term position has become available in our world class Liver Research Unit (LRU) for a Medical Officer – Research and Investigation. This is an exciting 12-month, fixed term opportunity starting May 2025 providing medical support to the research team, practicing as a Medical Officer, Research Physician and Investigator. LRU is part of the New Zealand Liver Transplant service (part of Surgical Directorate) and conducts studies in both liver transplant recipients and patients with acute and chronic liver diseases.

The number and complexity of studies has increased substantially since LRU opened in 2018. In addition to providing game changing therapies for unmet medical needs such as inoperable liver cancer, chronic viral hepatitis and metabolic associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), LRU is also the sole New Zealand site for multiple studies for liver transplantation complications and rare conditions (hereditary amyloidosis, Wilsons Disease, Primary Biliary Cholangitis, encephalopathy, severe alcoholic hepatitis). You will be joining an experienced team of 1 clinical lead, 4 principal investigators, 2 research physicians (1 permanent; 1 gastroenterology advanced trainee, who rotates every 6 months), 7 research nurses, 4 study coordinators and a unit manager.

This is a new role to help build a more sustainable research unit that aims to reduce barriers to access, improve equity and health outcomes and build on our reputation in providing novel therapies for liver disease.

Nga Pūkenga Motuhake | Important Skills

We are looking for a New Zealand registered medical practitioner with a current practising certificate, a good understanding of good clinical practice guidelines (ICH/GCP) and substantial post-graduate clinical experience along with a commitment to biculturalism and achieving equitable outcomes for Māori to join our team. You will need to have flexibility in relation to working outside of normal working hours including evenings and Saturdays, when required, to enable us to better provide patient centred equitable health care.

This role brings with it an opportunity to build on your experience and learning by connecting with hepatology consultants, Registrars and Nurse Specialists across New Zealand along with the New Zealand Liver transplant team in addition to the Liver Research Unit staff.
