  • Competitive remuneration starting from $81,206 to $97,557, depending on experience
  • Oranga Tamariki offers an impartial remuneration package that offers progression annually for experience through tenure
  • Permanent Full-time position based at our Rotorua site

Rotorua is home to 18 lakes, a haven for mountain biking, and offers numerous thrilling adventures. Our awesome OT Rotorua team has BIG hearts and a passion for getting things right for Tamariki, Rangatahi, and the community. Our office culture is supportive, and we regularly have catch-ups and shared kai. Join us and be part of our culture and journey

Mō te tūnga | About the role

We have a permanent Social Worker opportunity in our intake and assessment team based at our Rotorua site. Travel will be required throughout the region; you will have use of a fleet vehicle, therefore a full clean driver's licence is necessary.

The intake and assessment team manages reports of concern, including completing initial visits to whanau and Tamariki, interviewing Tamariki, and working closely with community stakeholders, Iwi, and Police. You will also arrange hui-a-whanau and assist whanau and Tamariki in accessing community supports. We have a combination of experienced and new social workers to provide the best service to the whanau we work with.

Please note: New social workers will not hold a case load for 12 months as you will be trained and supported on site and will also attend an induction programme. We believe this model gives you the best foot forward in your career with us as a Social Worker, and we will support and guide you every step of the way

Oranga Tamariki—Ministry for Children is committed to putting tamariki and rangatahi at the heart of what we do. In our work, we aim to demonstrate the following values:

  • We put Tamariki first
  • We believe Aroha is vital
  • We respect the Mana of people
  • We are Tika and Pono
  • We value Whakapapa
  • We recognise that Oranga is a journey

Our vision is to ensure New Zealand is the best place in the world to be a child. We are committed to partnering with hapū, iwi, and Māori organisations to find appropriate solutions for tamariki in need.

The Rotorua site is busy, and the successful applicant will need to think on their feet, be a team player, and work towards the best outcomes for Tamariki and whanau.

Key requirements of the role include:

  • A Social Work Qualification with Full Registration and a current Annual Practising Certificate with the New Zealand Social Worker Registration Board
  • A passion for working with children and youth, connecting, understanding, and building relationships to help provide positive outcomes
  • A strong and genuine commitment to strength-based practice
  • A preference and understanding of Te Ao Māori and indigenous models of practice
  • Strong PC and Microsoft Office Suite skills with strong written and verbal communication skills (you will need to provide professional written and verbal feedback to the courts)
  • Demonstrated resilience, problem-solving techniques, and flexibility
  • An understanding and awareness of the Oranga Tamariki Act, 1989
  • Proven expertise in social work practice in child protection and an understanding of New Zealand legislation related to the safety of children and young people
  • A full, clean, current driver's licence
  • An ability to work as a team player with resilience in highly stressful situations
