Clinical Services is a key specialist service of Oranga Tamariki providing psychological and therapeutic assessments and specialist interventions.

About the role | Mō te tūnga

This is a diverse and varied role that provides flexibility in the use of evidence-based intervention tools to achieve positive outcomes for tamariki and their whanau. Reporting to the Psychologist Team Leader, the successful candidate will gain exposure to comprehensive specialist parenting assessment work, assessments of children with complex care and protection histories, and other therapeutic interventions. We infrequently are required to provide expert evidence in Court, rather are able to engage in psychological work in the community with tamariki and whanau who need it most.

Experience working with children in a care and protection environment, providing assessment and therapy with tamariki and their whanau/caregivers, and assessments of parenting capacity will be an advantage. The successful candidate will work with a number of differing ethnicities including Maori and Pacifica clients and will liaise with community providers.

Oranga Tamariki has wide-ranging statutory responsibilities and is committed to services that are culturally appropriate. Oranga Tamariki recognises and has a commitment to the principles of the Treaty of Waitangi.

Ideal candidate for this role is an experienced Psychologist who has worked in Aotearoa in a similar role for a non-governmental organisation (NGO) sector and/or someone who has worked within Oranga Tamariki previously (but not essential).

  • A full, clean, current driver's licence
  • Full registration with New Zealand's Psychologist Board and Current practicing certificate
  • Empathy, patience and ability to see past what someone may be struggling with
  • Experience within the child protection sector, preferably within NZ
  • Able to demonstrate sound judgement and organisational skills
  • The ability to manage risk and make tough decisions
