Te Papa Atawhai DOC has an opportunity to shape and influence policy that drives transformational change in Aotearoa's conservation sector.

As Senior Policy Advisor, you'll play a pivotal role in crafting robust policies aligned with DOC's strategic direction. Develop robust and strategic policy advice for senior leaders and the Minister, and lead consultations and negotiations that represent Te Papa Atawhai and align with our strategic policy objectives.

You will be working on reform of the resource management system and existing RMA policy, climate change policy with an emphasis on nature-based solutions, or policy related to managing and protecting public conservation land while providing for commercial activities.

The position will be focussed on:

  • Leading analytical work (independently and as part of the wider team to identify, develop and assess policy options on settings for the new legislation)
  • Providing high-quality briefings for Ministers and Cabinet, and consultation material for key stakeholders and the wider public.
  • Influencing and supporting legislative change that meets the needs of our Minister, Treaty partners, and senior leaders
  • Playing a leadership role within the team, coaching and leading policy advisors across the wider team.

We are looking for motivated and passionate people with a genuine interest in environmental or conservation policy.

If you have some of the following, we are keen to hear from you:

  • Experience with the budget process and working at the Treasury
  • Experience working in the environment sector and on conservation issues
  • Strong policy analysis skills, including experience with legislative processes
  • Proven experience leading complex project-based policy work in a pragmatic and agile way
  • Well-developed stakeholder management skills, including involvement in public consultation processes
  • Strong critical thinking capability – adept at identifying critical issues and risks when undertaking policy analysis, and provides pragmatic solutions to problems
  • Ability to mentor and manaaki other colleagues in their work
  • Cultural awareness – understanding of Te Tiriti o Waitangi including the willingness to engage in Te Ao Māori concepts and/or understanding tikanga Māori.

The Policy Directorate provides the strategic direction and thought leadership for DOC and for the conservation system. The Directorate ensures DOC has the right frameworks and settings in place to deliver on our outcomes for conservation, to meet Government priorities, and to be an honourable Treaty partner.

The salary range for this position is $95,706.00 - $128,271 with the starting salary of the successful applicant being based on their relevant skills and experience.
