The role/Te mahi
As a Research Technician in the Department of Pathology, you will be providing technical support for research projects in the Horsfield laboratory.
This includes conducting routine lab experiments (e.g., DNA/RNA extraction, genotyping, molecular biology, qPCR, histology, and immunohistochemistry).
The position also entails overseeing zebrafish facility operations, including microinjection, breeding, genotyping, maintaining animal records, assisting with teaching and collaborative projects, and ensuring compliance with facility protocols.
Key responsibilities of the role are:
- General laboratory management.
- Assisting with problem-solving and data management.
- Contributing to research dissemination.
- Equipment maintenance and inventory control.
- Compliance monitoring and student training.
- Experimentation to support research and teaching.
The successful candidate will have a minimum of a BSc or equivalent qualification, along with substantial post-graduate experience in molecular biology and laboratory management.
Your prior experience will include database management and knowledge of biological compliance to contribute to a collaborative research team.
Essential skills include:
- Strong organisation and time management skills with meticulous record-keeping.
- An ability to learn new skills quickly.
- Excellent communication skills, the ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
- Adaptability to changing research needs.
- Experience with zebrafish husbandry and genotyping would be advantageous.
- Flexibility to work outside core hours when required.
Professor Horsfield's research group is interested in how proteins necessary for chromosome architecture contribute to gene expression, animal development and cancer. The main focus of the research is to understand the regulation of gene expression by cohesin and related proteins, which are also required for sister chromatid cohesion during mitosis.

This is a full-time (37.5 hours), fixed term (3 year) position, located in Ōtepoti, Dunedin.
The appointment range for this role is $73,073 to $77,780. Top of the range is $85,749.
