Are you a passionate veterinarian ready to take your career to the next level? Auckland Council is seeking a Lead Veterinarian to oversee our veterinary services for Animal Management. This newly created role offers you the chance to lead a dedicated team of veterinary services staff, drive innovation in animal welfare practices, and make a meaningful impact across the community.

As the Lead Veterinarian, you'll spearhead clinical operations and council's new desexing campaign, set the highest standards of animal care, and provide expert veterinary services and advice. Your leadership will directly contribute to improving animal welfare, reducing unwanted litters, supporting council services, and enhancing community engagement.

This is a full-time fixed term role until March 2026. Location is in Henderson Animal Shelter.

You're an experienced veterinarian with a proven track record of leadership and clinical excellence. With at least 5 years of veterinary experience (including 2+ years in a leadership role), you have extensive expertise in surgeries and handling animals of various sizes and temperaments.

You are:

  • A strong leader who can guide, support, and develop a high-performing team.
  • A compassionate and patient professional, dedicated to providing exceptional animal care.
  • Highly organised, with attention to detail and a proactive approach to problem-solving.
  • A confident communicator who can educate staff, engage with the community, and collaborate across teams.
  • Degree in Veterinary Medicine (DVM or equivalent).
  • Current registration with (or eligibility for) the Veterinary Council of New Zealand (VCNZ).
  • Full New Zealand driver's licence.

Salary ranges from $140,000 and $164,000 plus KiwiSaver and benefits.
