Christchurch, Canterbury, New Zealand Christchurch City Council Full time

Develop your career as a professional Park Ranger and become part of the team looking after some of the diverse natural and open space areas of Christchurch. From the wild beauty of Banks Peninsula to the secretive wetlands of coastal Christchurch, our residents can enjoy some of the most spectacular and accessible parks in the country.

About the role | Ko te mahi nei

We are seeking motivated, field-based Rangers to work as part of a small team focused on mowing and amenity maintenance of Christchurch and Banks Peninsulas. As a field ranger, you'll be expected to use a range of light and heavy equipment and tools, so you must be comfortable with the practical elements of this role. You'll be working within our Council systems including health and safety and asset management systems. You'll be engaging with the community as well as key stakeholders including special interest partnership groups and volunteers, as well as working with the wider regional parks team.

You'll be confident in your ability to work in small teams, communicate, plan, problem-solve, and take action where required. Being personable and approachable will be an essential skill for this role as you will be working in some of our most popular regional park areas.

This role requires you to be physically fit and have a good understanding of, and some proven experience in, grounds and amenity maintenance - particularly turf and garden/restoration site maintenance, good interpersonal skills, and a strong customer service focus. You'll support the Ranger team with the maintenance and enhancement of these significant recreational and natural area assets. You'll have the ability to work both alone and alongside other rangers, as well as having a strong connection with volunteers in the community.

Importantly, you'll be a team player with strong verbal communication skills, meaning you can relate to members of the public from all backgrounds. You'll have proven capability in a range of field-based skills, such as mowing, use of light and heavy equipment, spraying, and problem-solving, as well as strong recreation management skills.

What's in it for you? He aha ngā hua ki a koe?

Working for the Christchurch City Council allows you to contribute directly to the community and make a positive impact on the lives of residents and visitors. You will also benefit from:

  • Access to training programmes, workshops, and development opportunities
  • Flexible working arrangements - WFH, adjustable start and finish times, option to purchase extra leave.
  • Collaboration - exposure to wider areas of the organisation
  • Benefits - a variety of benefits for Council staff from health schemes to retail discounts.

Through collaboration, innovation, and a strong commitment to community, the council provides an environment where one's skills and passions can shine, making it an exceptional choice for those seeking purpose and impact in their career.

At the Christchurch City Council, we are dedicated to building a diverse, inclusive, and authentic workplace, so if you're excited about this role but your past experience doesn't align perfectly with the job description, we encourage you to apply anyway.

We understand that recruitment processes can be challenging. If you require any support or adjustments to help you put your best foot forward, please reach out to us at jobs@ccc.govt.nz
