Christchurch, Canterbury, New Zealand Christchurch City Council Full time

When you join the Christchurch City Council, you'll be getting involved first hand and working to shape the future of this city, our communities and environment. As well as working with awesome people within the organisation, you'll find many opportunities to develop and progress your career with us.

About the team | Ko te rōpū nei

Our team is responsible for ensuring that Council projects and physical works contracts (including water, stormwater, landscape, building, structures, sewer and roading work) are managed effectively. Our focus is to ensure the delivery of the Council's Capital Programme.

About the role | Ko te mahi nei

Working within our Technical Services & Design Unit, our Contract Supervisors deal directly with the contractor on a regular basis to keep the construction on time, to budget and scope. You will play an important role in dealing with any community concerns while construction is taking place and often be involved in tender evaluations. A snapshot of your responsibilities include:

  • Ensuring that Council projects and physical works contracts are managed efficiently, while supporting the delivery of a significant portion of the Council's annual construction expenditure as listed in the Long-Term Plan.
  • The role will mainly focus on stormwater projects which include the construction of wetlands, stormwater retention basins, waterway enhancements, parklands and large-scale landscape areas.
  • Auditing, on behalf of the Asset Units, of works to be vested in the council asset including maintenance and consent work relating to water, stormwater, landscape, building, structural, sewer or roading.

You'll be a team player not afraid to deal with issues and have experience building and maintaining relationships with important stakeholders and contractors. You'll also have familiarity with industry best practice e.g. building and civil engineering construction standards (NZS 3910 and 3916). To be successful you will have:

  • A qualification aligned to Civil Engineering, and/or with extensive experience in one or more of the areas of stormwater management, or parks/landscape.
  • Practical application, with experience in contracting or working alongside contractors.
  • Demonstrated ability to monitor costs and work within budgets.
  • Demonstrated ability in relationship management, negotiation and persuasion.

What's in it for you? He aha ngā hua ki a koe?

You will join a team of innovative specialists working alongside fellow technical staff and have the chance to make the role your own by delivering improved service for the Council. You will also work in a vibrant office environment, using the latest engineering technology and receive plenty of professional and personal development opportunities while working within an inclusive and collaborative culture.

At the Christchurch City Council, we are dedicated to building a diverse, inclusive and authentic workplace, so if you're excited about this role but your past experience doesn't align perfectly with the job description, we encourage you to apply anyways.

We understand that recruitment processes can be challenging. If you require any support or adjustments to help you put your best foot forward, please reach out to us at jobs@ccc.govt.nz
