Australian Defence Apparel (ADA) is a leading innovator of cutting-edge uniforms and personal equipment specialising in complex user requirements from design to distribution. As an integrated uniform solutions provider, we have long been providing expert assistance in a variety of industries across Australia and New Zealand.

ADA New Zealand (ADANZ) is a subsidiary of ADA and was established in 2021 following the award of the NZDF Wearables Supply and Managed Services contract.

The Role:

The role of the Design and Product Development Lead is pivotal in ensuring that the design and development of products not only meet but exceed the highest standards of quality and performance. The role encompasses the entire product development lifecycle, with a special emphasis on developing fit for purpose uniform and equipment solutions for a multitude of environments and job roles. It involves both the creation of innovative new products and the thoughtful redesign of existing items.

The Design and Product Development Lead is responsible for:

  • Orchestrating the evolution of design concepts into detailed product specifications and championing these designs through to the creation of samples and prototypes.
  • Producing sample garments that align with cost specifications and manufacturing constraints, while adhering to established cost guidelines.
  • Collaborating closely with key clients to grasp the distinct needs of various job roles, translating these into tailored, purpose-driven solutions.
  • Leveraging expertise as a subject matter authority to guide the product development process, ensuring that fit, construction, quality, and sustainability standards are consistently met.
  • Selecting suitable fabrics, materials, and accessories for uniform and equipment production, based on comprehensive knowledge and industry insights.
  • Engaging actively with the Design and Development team, effectively communicating design changes and updates to stakeholders, ensuring a cohesive and transparent development process.

To be successful our ideal candidate will have the following:

  • Tertiary Qualification in Fashion Design or Industrial Design.
  • Minimum 3 years' experience within a design role in the apparel industry.
  • Strong understanding of garment design, construction, sustainable materials, and manufacturing process.
  • Ability to create technical drawings on Adobe suite (Illustrator and InDesign) or similar software.
  • Excellent project management, organisational and time management skills.
  • Strong Microsoft Office skills – particularly Word and Excel.
  • Ability to work under pressure with strong motivation towards implementation and result.
  • Commitment to personal learning, development, and improvement in pursuit of their own performance objectives and those of the team and organisation.
  • A high level of motivation and commitment to ADANZ values.
  • Excellent communication skills and confident presentation skills.
