Āu Mahi | What You Will Do
As a Senior Learning Designer, you will play a crucial role in shaping the future of learning at the University of Canterbury (UC). Your primary responsibility will be to develop and deliver high-quality hybrid, blended, and online courses that enhance student engagement.

You will work closely with academics, subject matter experts, and the wider Learning & Development team to ensure that courses are informed by best practice principles and designed for maximum impact. By leading projects and mentoring Learning Designers, you will contribute to a strong and forward-thinking team culture.

In addition, you will provide guidance on innovative teaching strategies, support professional development initiatives, and help ensure that learning design remains at the forefront of modern education.

In this role, you will:

  • Lead the design, development, and review of engaging and effective hybrid, blended, and online courses
  • Mentor Learning Designers, providing guidance, feedback, and opportunities for growth
  • Promote learner-centered course design, ensuring alignment with best practices and accredited curricula
  • Collaborate with academics, SMEs, and content producers to create engaging and meaningful learning experiences
  • Evaluate and recommend instructional materials, digital learning tools, and teaching strategies
  • Support faculty and staff in enhancing existing courses through blended learning approaches
  • Encourage biculturally responsive learning strategies that align with institutional values
  • Identify and address challenges in the learning design process, escalating risks where necessary
  • Actively contribute to a workplace culture that values inclusiveness, collaboration, and continuous learning.

Mōu | Who You Are
You will have at least 5 years' experience in a Learning Design-related role, particularly in hybrid and online learning, preferably within a tertiary education environment, as well as:

  • An in-depth knowledge of learning design and a passion for innovation in education
  • A National Diploma (NZQA Level 7) in Education, Learning Design, Instructional Design, e-Learning, or a related field
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively across teams
  • A creative and solution-focused mindset, with experience in designing learner-centered experiences
  • Knowledge of best practices in assessment, course development, and digital learning technologies
  • An alignment with our organisation's values and culture, promoting a positive and inclusive work environment.

We empower our learning communities to realise their potential by driving future-focused educational opportunities and innovative learning design. We work with faculty to co-design flexible, hybrid, and online courses and to enhance face-to-face courses with technology tools and applications.
