POSITION OVERVIEW
The Mechanical-Electrical Service Technician will focus on hands-on mechanical servicing, repair, and refurbishment of commercial food equipment and related assets. This position is ideal for a skilled technician who excels in mechanical diagnostics, equipment rebuilds, and component fabrication.
You will be responsible for both onsite servicing and workshop-based repairs, working with mechanical systems and occasionally supporting light electrical tasks (if qualified).
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Mechanical Focused Duties
- Disassemble, inspect, refurbish, and reassemble commercial food equipment and mechanical sub-systems.
- Identify worn/damaged parts and execute mechanical repairs using lathes, milling machines, grinders, cold saws, etc.
- Fabricate or repair parts in-house as needed to reduce downtime and support long-term asset function.
- Conduct planned preventative maintenance (PPM) on client machinery to ensure reliable performance.
- Maintain strong documentation of all repair activities via digital systems.
Diagnostics & Problem Solving
- Investigate mechanical failures and root causes to recommend and implement robust solutions.
- Support electrical fault identification if dual-trade qualified (optional).
- Recommend component upgrades or part replacements to improve equipment longevity.
Client Service & Communication
- Deliver friendly, transparent, and solution-oriented service to clients.
- Provide service recommendations and clearly explain work completed.
- Maintain trust-based relationships that reflect the FMS "great to deal with" brand.
Workshop Engineering
- Operate manual engineering tools and machines safely to complete fabrication or modification tasks.
- Maintain workshop equipment and ensure a clean, efficient workspace.
- Ensure mechanical/engineering consumables stock is maintained & replenished as required.
Health, Safety & Compliance
- Identify risks (e.g., guarding concerns) and report hazards immediately.
- Follow company safety policies and regulatory standards.
- Ensure incident/accident reports are submitted with 100% compliance.
Team Collaboration
- Work closely with the Technical Manager, Workshop Team, and FMS field Technicians.
- Assist in mentoring apprentices or junior staff when needed.
- Participate in on-call rotation if required.
Vehicle & Equipment Care
- Maintain company vehicle in excellent condition.
- Ensure WOF, rego, and fuel use are monitored and reported.
Additional Duties
- Support fabrication/installation projects as & when needed.
- Undertake other responsibilities as delegated by management.
KEY PERFORMANCE INDICATORS (KPIs)
Billable Hours: Maintain 85% billable time.
Job Profitability: Average margin of 50% or higher.
Client Feedback: Positive client feedback with minimum satisfaction score of 4.5/5.
Safety Compliance: 100% reporting of safety incidents and issues.
Workshop Efficiency: Deliver timely turnarounds and minimize rework.
Technical Efficiency: Achieve 90%+ first-time fix rate on service calls.
Response Time: Maintain company set response times for urgent repair requests.
Documentation Accuracy: 100% completion of service records within the company's system.
IDEAL CANDIDATE PROFILE
Technical Skills & Experience:
- Proficiency in welding, fabrication, and mechanical modifications is a plus.
- Trade qualification in engineering, fitter & turner, mechanical, mechatronics, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
- Basic electrical aptitude a plus (dual trade or EST qualification preferred but not required) or willingness to obtain necessary certification.
- Experience servicing, repairing, and maintaining commercial food machinery and facility equipment.
- Strong diagnostic and problem-solving skills for electrical and mechanical issues.
- Experience servicing, repairing and rebuilding mechanical equipment—ideally commercial kitchen or food-specialised machinery.
- Familiarity with machining tools and workshop engineering practices.
- Familiarity with PPM programmes and 24/7 emergency breakdown services.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team.
- Basic knowledge of automation, PLCs, variable speed drives (VSDs), and motor controls.

WORK SCHEDULE
Standard Hours: Monday to Friday, 7:30 AM – 4:00 PM (40 hours/week).
Flexible Work Times: Work may vary between 7:00 AM – 5:00 PM based on operational needs.
Overtime: Available as needed.
On-Call Duties: Required as part of the team's rotating on-call roster.
