The role is a permanent part-time role (0.5 FTE) based in the Gisborne Office servicing the Tairawhiti Region.

The Special Education Advisor provides effective, efficient and equitable learning support for students who cannot readily access the curriculum in accordance with the goals, objectives and policies of the Ministry of Education.

The ideal candidate would have proven experience in working and supporting tamariki with High and Complex Needs and experience in challenging behavioural needs.

  • Technical / professional knowledge and skills – having achieved a satisfactory level of technical and professional skill or knowledge in position-related areas; keeping up with current developments and trends in areas of expertise.
  • Building Strategic Working Relationships – developing and using collaborative relationships to facilitate the accomplishment of work goals.

Salary range: $69,996 - $118,450 per annum + 3% kiwi saver. The successful candidate will be appointed at a salary which reflects individual skills and experience.

To be successful in the role, you will have proven experience and outcomes in Learning Support. Additional qualifications in Learning Support would be an advantage.

You will also:

  • Have demonstrable knowledge, experience, and skills in supporting children and young people with severe and challenging behaviours.
  • Have an ability and willingness to work in collaborative partnership with other professionals, agencies, families and the sector.
  • Bring excellent interpersonal and communication skills, including an ability to sustain productive professional relationships.
  • Offer a genuine commitment to evidence-based interventions, which demonstrate inclusive education practice and contribute to raising student achievement.
  • Sensitivity to cultural and ethnic diversity and a commitment to the principles of the Treaty of Waitangi.

Learning Support is a critical part of the Sector Enablement and Support Group in the Ministry. We are charged with leading the education sector in ensuring that children and young people with additional learning needs are supported to achieve their full potential through education. Across our takiwā, we provide leadership and guidance to deliver education service for school/kura, early learning services, whānau and ākonga, and our local communities.
