Hand on heart – are you worried about what the world will look like for our future generations?

As engineers, it's hard to ignore the data around the climate crisis… it should also be hard to ignore this opportunity to be part of creating a sustainable future in Aotearoa New Zealand's built environment

We are looking for the right person to help identify, develop and deliver structural research that makes steel construction safer in Aotearoa New Zealand's unique environment, whilst reducing their environmental impact. If ideas around circular design, implementation of materials passports, life cycle analysis and green buildings give you reason to believe steel is the 'go to' material of choice in Aotearoa – then you are the right person to champion and drive these initiatives with us. Come build the difference

What will you do with us?

Report to the General Manager of HERA's Structural Systems, as a Senior Structural Sustainability Engineer you'll join our Auckland based team to play a key thought leadership role in engineering for Aotearoa.

You'll help us develop great relationships with members and clients and ensure successful outcomes by driving standards updates and design guides. You'll also deliver preliminary designs for multi-storey buildings, sustainability initiatives and educational programs that give industry the right skills for the future.

Future focused research on various aspects of structural engineering, the intersection between Mātauranga Māori and Construction 4.0, and other Industry 4.0 related activities such as software development will also play a part in your day to day focuses.

Key responsibilities of this role:

  • Project manage HERA's sustainability research and support services;
  • Identify, develop, and deliver structural sustainability research opportunities;
  • Identify and lead the application for external research funding opportunities (e.g. grants);

  • Develop design guides to disseminate technical reports findings in a practical and streamlined way with a focus on sustainability;
  • Join and report to influential industry advisory groups;
  • Apply structural expertise to consult on technical projects and review designs of sustainable structures;

  • Represent HERA on national (NZS) and Australasian (AS/NZS) sustainability standards committees;
  • Provide life cycle analysis (LCA) of buildings and bridges;
  • Assess environmental impact of buildings and bridges and design (propose solutions) to reduce it;
  • Champion a new focus on sustainability projects in our goal to reduce steel's carbon emissions and implement a circular economy in Aotearoa and its steel industry and construction sectors;
  • Deliver against income-generating targets;
  • Develop a community of members and engineers engaged with HERA's Structural Systems activities and support strategic focuses of HERA;
  • Support and share social and email campaigns to your network to assist with its delivery as required (Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, Twitter, LinkedIn);
  • Maintain knowledge of and follow best practice health and safety requirements;

The responsibilities of this role are expected to change over time. The incumbent will need the flexibility to adapt and develop as the environment evolves.
