About the opportunity

** This is a 6-month fixed term position with an ideal start date of early April **

We are looking for a highly motivated and fast-learning Data Engineer Assistant to support our Azure Data Lakehouse migration. The ideal candidate should have a strong background in SQL development and optimization, experience working with cloud data platforms (Azure or AWS), and a passion for improving query performance and reporting solutions.

As part of this role, you will be responsible for refactoring SQL Server queries to Databricks Spark SQL, optimizing long-running queries, and rebuilding Power BI reports to align with our new data lakehouse architecture.

Key Responsibilities

  • Refactor SQL Server queries into Databricks Spark SQL for performance and scalability.
  • Optimize complex SQL queries.
  • Work with Azure Data Lakehouse (ADLS, Databricks, ADF) to migrate and transform data.
  • Test Power BI reports to ensure efficient querying and accurate insights.

Required Skills & Experience

  • Strong expertise in SQL & query optimization (CTEs, joins).
  • Familiarity with Power BI development.
  • Ability to analyze and refactor complex queries into efficient execution plans.
  • Fast-learning, strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and ability to work independently.

Nice to Have

  • Knowledge about SQL Server and Data Lake Storage (ADLS).
  • Experience with Azure Databricks / Fabric.
  • Familiarity with Delta Lake and Lakehouse architectures.
  • Knowledge of Python / PySpark for data transformations.
  • Previous experience in a data migration project.
