About The Role
Based at our Kawerau manufacturing site, you will work with our Operations Manager - Converting and other experts to develop, test, and improve our packaging. You will also work with customers and suppliers to find out what they need and want from our packaging.
You will be part of a team that is always looking for new ways to reduce cost, improve quality, and reduce waste. You will also have a chance to learn from our global partners at Essity Global about the latest trends and innovations in packaging, with a strong focus on sustainability and recycled materials.

What you will Do
- Working with marketing managers, artwork designers, pre-press providers, packaging suppliers, manufacturing process leaders and outsourced product suppliers to deliver packaging of the required quality and performance on time within budget.
- Drive & lead the business in sustainable packaging technologies, proactively search for materials to reduce cost.
- Planning and leading the packaging component of new product launches and product range upgrades.
- Development of technically sound, formally documented, packaging material and print specifications.
- Ensuring print and packaging acceptance processes at critical first-run press approvals are completed.
- Provision of technical input to relevant cross-business unit and cross-functional R&D and PI projects.
- Delivering continuous improvement projects in line with annual goals and objectives.
As an experienced Packaging Technologist, you will bring an excellent ability to communicate and relate with a wide range of people within and outside of the business and have a high level of organisational skills. You are adept at coaching and mentoring others, multitasking, problem-solving, and clearly presenting information. Your adaptability, creativity, and attention to detail will drive the success of our team and contribute significantly to our business goals.
The ideal candidate will also possess the following skills and attributes:
- Degree qualified engineer in process, packing, or printing.
- 3-5 years in a similar role as a packaging technologist or packaging engineer.
- Background in high-speed packaging, manufacturing, or FMCG environment.
- Excellent written/verbal communication and relationship-building skills – you work well in a team and can influence others when needed
- Experience managing projects and the documentation required, with SAP/APO experience.
- Proven experience with continuous improvement and lean manufacturing.
- Ability to adapt and respond to change.
- Excellent attention to detail.
- Positivity, self-motivation, and a solutions-focused approach – you see road bumps as a challenge, not a disaster
