Te Tūranga | About the Role:
Silver Fern Farms has 14 processing sites across he motu, most of which have associated landholdings which accommodate a variety of features and activities. These are broad ranging, from stock grazing, land-based wastewater/solids application and closed landfills to streams and wetland areas.
This Environmental Manager - Land manages land-based environmental practices, identifying and managing risk, ensuring compliance with environmental regulations, enhancing biodiversity, and aligning with sustainability goals.
Your leadership and strategic input will shape environmental outcomes, influence internal and external stakeholders, and drive continuous improvement across site and corporate levels.
This is a broad-ranging role that partners with our Site Leadership, Corporate Operations teams, and our Sustainability business unit, and operates at a nationwide level.
Key responsibilities include:
- Oversee landholdings including land-based wastewater irrigation, solids management, and contaminated land aspects, leases, easements and agreements.
- Manage resource consents and ensure regulatory compliance.
- Develop and implement key management plans (including NZFAP+).
- Champion biodiversity initiatives through habitat restoration and sustainable land-use practices.
- Manage site details information, registers and maps.
- Partner with internal and external stakeholders to support site operations.
- Drive continuous improvement by setting environmental objectives and leading initiatives.
This role will require some regular travel to the sites across NZ, so you will ideally have some flexibility to travel to these sites as required. To broadly estimate the travel requirements, you can expect to travel 1-2 times per month for 2-3 days at a time. There may be occasions when more is required.

We are looking for an energetic, proactive individual with a growth mindset and a passion for sustainability and land management. You'll thrive in a team environment, be self-motivated, and have the ability to work independently while taking ownership of key deliverables.
We have two Environmental managers that focus on non-land environmental factors, who you will work very closely with, and who will look to you for your expertise in this area.
Key attributes for success in this role include:
- Extensive knowledge and experience in environmental compliance, land management, and the ability to navigate the evolving regulatory landscape.
- A university education in Environmental Science, Land Management, or a related field, along with 3-5 years of industry experience in a similar role.
- In-depth understanding of environmental management systems and compliance requirements.
- A passion for continuous improvement and sustainability in the food and agriculture sectors.
- Proven ability to lead and influence key stakeholders across various levels.
- Excellent communication skills and a demonstrated ability to manage relationships effectively.
