We are seeking a Research & Development Technologist for our new factory in Hornby, Christchurch. Reporting to the Head of Operations, this role requires you to support the facility through maintaining, coordinating, and monitoring the site's Research and Development projects. This will involve the formulation of new products to meet labelling, nutrition, cost and performance requirements. Production of benchtop samples. Oversight and assistance with factory trials and documentation of trial outcomes. Sampling and organising lab testing of raw materials and finished goods, along with nutritional analysis of results to confirm conformance with regulatory limits. Review and creation of on-pack information to ensure information is accurate, and meets regulatory requirements.

About the Business

New Zealand Riverland Foods Limited is a new business which contract manufactures high meat content canned food for cats and dogs throughout the world. The company sources the highest quality meat ingredients from throughout the South Island. Our high-volume canning facility utilises the latest petfood production techniques and equipment, resulting in a modern approach to pet nutrition.

We create and produce custom recipes for clients in North America, Asia, and Australasia. Our new production facility incorporates the latest automation technology, ensuring optimal efficiency to meet the highest customer demands. This commitment to efficiency is balanced with our unwavering dedication to quality, demonstrated through our rigorous testing and certification process.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage, coordinate and lead new product development projects to deliver outcomes that meet or exceed the need of customers.
  • Formulate new products that meet labelling, nutrition, cost, and performance requirements of customers.
  • Maintain sampling programme and oversee laboratory testing of raw materials and finished goods.
  • Assisting with developing, improving and optimising the business systems to support continuous quality improvement.
  • Create and maintain specifications for finished goods, raw materials & packaging.
  • Maintain existing recipes and assist with temporary recipes where required to ensure the continuity of supply to customers.
  • To lend assistance as required to the factory to ensure the highest production standards are maintained.

We are looking for a candidate who has:

  • Previous experience in a food manufacturing environment.
  • Tertiary qualification in Food Technology or similar.
  • A good understanding of GMP and HACCP principles.
  • A commitment to continuous improvement of quality and production systems.
  • Able to perform the practical requirements of making benchtop recipes and participating in factory trials.
  • Attention to detail with clear and accurate documentation skills.
  • A disciplined and proactive approach to timelines and compliance procedures.
  • A smart and enthusiastic team player who has the desire to work in a role where they can make a difference.
