Watercare has an exciting opportunity for an experienced Environmental Scientist to join our team.

In this role you will:

  • Oversee resource consent compliance for Watercare's complex consents, particularly Mangere and Rosedale, ensuring adherence to regulatory requirements and proactively addressing compliance risks.
  • Lead environmental monitoring and reporting programmes, ensuring data accuracy, regulatory alignment, and effective communication of environmental performance.
  • Identify root causes of non-compliances and develop solutions, particularly where adverse environmental effects occur, to mitigate risks and enhance environmental performance.
  • Lead responses to environmental incidents and undertake investigations, ensuring effective mitigation, stakeholder communication, and regulatory reporting.
  • Strengthen Watercare's scientific capabilities and advance understanding of environmental performance through research, data analysis, and innovation.
  • Lead environmental enhancement and improvement projects, supporting sustainability initiatives and operational best practices.
  • Enhance community engagement on Watercare's environmental performance, fostering transparency, collaboration, and public trust.
  • Provide expert environmental guidance across the business, mentoring team members on compliance and environmental performance matters.

To be successful in this role, you will need:

  • An honours degree (or higher) in environmental science or management, environmental engineering or another related field.
  • A minimum of seven years of experience in environmental science or management.
  • A strong understanding of environmental monitoring, compliance frameworks, and data analysis.
  • An ability to analyse complex environmental issues and develop practical solutions.
  • Capable of leading discussions, negotiating, and collaborating across teams.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Be comfortable presenting to community groups and writing technical reports.
  • Strong collaboration and communication skills.

Experience with business continuity and quality systems, a background in water/wastewater quality science and an understanding of environmental regulation and risk management are also advantageous.
