Auckland, Auckland, New Zealand Transpower New Zealand Full time
Grid Operations Planner - Auckland or Christchurch

Be among the first 25 applicants

Join our team to manage grid access, enhance safety, and support infrastructure projects across Aotearoa, with opportunities for skill development.

At Transpower, we're committed to leading New Zealand's journey toward a net-zero carbon economy, ensuring a secure and reliable electricity system for the future.

About The Team

Our Operations Division runs the wholesale electricity market and operates the power system so that New Zealand homes and businesses can access the electricity they need every second of every day. The National Grid Operations Centre (NGOC) manages the operation of Transpower's grid assets to enable the safe and efficient delivery of electricity to New Zealand. This includes coordinating grid outages, identifying, analysing, and mitigating risks on the grid and, when there are any events, ensuring we restore electricity supply as quickly and safely as possible.

About The Opportunity

Based in either our Auckland or Christchurch office, you'll join a growing national team supporting grid projects and maintenance across the country. In this role, you'll design and prepare outage documentation, influence project plans, and maintain operational databases, all while improving processes and safety protocols. As the main point of contact, you'll work closely with distribution companies, service providers, engineers, and project managers to support the commissioning and decommissioning of assets. As you grow in the role, you'll help improve the grid operations planning process, expand your professional network, and have the chance to manage real-time grid operations. If you're after more flexibility, you can also transition into shift work when the time is right.

About You

You're a big-picture thinker who's comfortable with the details. Problem-solving comes naturally to you, and you enjoy piecing things together to understand availability, timeframes, and key requirements. As we move towards a more digital future, you're eager to find ways to improve processes and performance. Whether you're an experienced outage planner, operator, or have an electrical background with an interest in Transmission, we'll support your development with ongoing training. If you're curious, methodical, technically minded, and ready to step into or retrain in electricity transmission, this is your opportunity

To be considered, your CV and cover letter will demonstrate:
  • A relevant tertiary qualification or equivalent experience, ideally in power systems, engineering, or a related field.
  • Clear and effective communication, both in writing and verbally.
  • Experience establishing and maintaining relationships and collaborating effectively.
  • Knowledge and experience with Microsoft packages.
  • Examples of addressing technical challenges and proposing practical solutions.
While not essential, tell us if you have:
  • Working knowledge of the electricity industry and the role of Transpower within that industry.
  • Working knowledge of transmission assets and outage management.
Join us at Transpower

Aotearoa is powered by the people who work here. Every home, every marae, every electric vehicle, every hospital relies on the electricity we manage and deliver. This is your opportunity to join us on a mission that affects all New Zealanders, every day, and long into the future. With over 28 nationalities, our people provide diverse perspectives, knowledge, and rich experience which they love to share. We work in the office or on-site for a minimum of three days each week, which helps us build and maintain relationships, support learning, deliver outcomes and sustain our culture. This approach also offers staff the flexibility they need for both work and personal commitments, with adaptable daily start and finish times. We prioritise employee wellbeing with a range of health and wellness benefits.

Next steps

If you're someone with an interest in critical infrastructure who loves working in a supportive team, we invite you to review the position description in full and apply without delay. The role closes Sunday 30 March; however, applications will be reviewed as they are received, and you may be invited to complete a one-way online interview. This will enable you to tell your story and highlight your experience in a much more personalised way.
