Library Advisor - Social Inclusion


Our library teams work hard to create safe opportunities for people to participate, connect, and have a sense of enjoyment.

Central to this work are our values of manaakitanga, māramatanga, whanaungatanga and kaitiakitanga.


If you have been working with people with complex needs, such as homelessness, mental health issues, and drug or alcohol addiction for at least 4 years, this might be the opportunity for you to help build even more inclusive library services.

He Hononga, the Ground Floor of Tūranga, is a place of connection and a great base for this role.

You would start most of your work days here as the library opens (8am), and in the course of the day you would work with people around the central city and in our various networks.


The role involves:

  • Building relationships with communities of interest, and the organisations supporting them
  • Identifying and responding to needs by promoting and delivering library services, and contributing to new service initiatives
  • Sharing knowledge and supporting colleagues so that we grow awareness and capability in our libraries team and networks.


If you apply, we expect you will be able to demonstrate understanding of what our service values actually look like in practice.

We will also need you to demonstrate your ability to listen, look for solutions, encourage involvement, and exercise good judgement even in challenging circumstances.


Skills and Experience:

  • A minimum of 4 years experience working with diverse communities and people with complex needs such as homelessness, mental distress, and alcohol and other drug use
  • Relevant experience of placebased services such as community centres and public libraries
  • Level 5 qualification in a relevant field e.g. social work, community development, education, health
  • Clean and full drivers licence (desirable)
