What we are looking for


We are seeking an enthusiastic scientist to join our marine biogeochemistry team to lead and drive research on the ecological role of phytoplankton in the marine carbon cycle in Aotearoa New Zealand coastal and open ocean regions, and the Ross Sea sector of the Southern Ocean.

You will develop research and consulting opportunities, prepare proposals, assemble and manage project teams to complete all aspects of the work, including data analysis and reporting, preparation of publications and other outputs.


You will:
- collect and analyse phytoplankton community data from ship-based fieldwork and laboratory experiments
- derive new estimates of net and gross primary productivity
- determine the environmental factors driving the structure and functioning of marine phytoplankton
- contribute to the development of regional algorithms to parameterise phytoplankton community distributions in time and space from remotely sensed satellite data
- undertake targeted field, experimental and modelling-based research on the factors affecting the marine carbon cycle and the transfer of energy from phytoplankton to zooplankton and the fate of primary and secondary production in open ocean and coastal marine food webs.
