Mō te tūnga | About the role

You will be providing health policy advice and development across a wide range of health streams as part of the Defence Health Directorate (DHD) with the New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF).

This role works as part of a highly collaborative, close-knit team on to ensure accurate, quality outcomes and contribute to NZDF's operational readiness.


Duties for this role will include:

  • developing, writing and reviewing Defence Health policies, standards and protocols;
- engaging with stakeholders to understand requirements and provide clear policy, standards and protocols guidance;
- providing training, guidance and advice to the wider NZDF with policy changes;
- collaborating and actively participating with team discussions and workload; and
- leading and contributing to related projects as needed.

You will be a highly motivated person with extensive experience within policy and health settings.

This includes having strong written abilities and outstanding attention to detail in order to ensure quality assurance of all work produced.

This is a fast-paced environment, so you will need to think outside the box, recognise the flow-on effect of policy changes and understand how to communicate these to an audience from a variety of professional, cultural and social backgrounds.


Ideally, you will also have:

- proven experience as a Policy Analyst in a public sector environment, including developing, analysing and updating policies;
- a strong background in health, with an understanding of how the health system functions at all levels;
- excellent interpersonal skills, with an ability to build strong rapports with key stakeholders;
- the ability to work autonomously, as well as collaborate, support and actively share ideas within a close knit team; and
- excellent prioritisation and organisation skills, with an ability to manage competing priorities under pressure.

The role of Defence Health is to ensure a better, stronger and healthier NZDF by:

  • maximising the health of the operational Force;
- creating a deployable health capability that can go anywhere, anytime with flexibility and agility; and
- providing robust benchmarked military health governance to the Force.


The role of Defence Health includes the provision of primary medical and dental care, physical performance and rehabilitation care, occupational health, mental health, social wellness and spiritual wellbeing.

Defence Health also partners with other NZDF teams to support health and safety, and single Service health specialties (e.g. Maritime medical).
The DHD provides health and wellbeing stewardship, strategic governance and professional/technical control over all NZDF health elements.

The scope of responsibilities includes, but is not limited to:

- developing health strategy and policy;
- quality management oversight;
- measuring and reporting on Defence Health's performance and addressing issues in partnership with the Joint Support Group;
- health information and systems management;
- health workforce planning;
- developing and implementing health and wellness related educational programmes;
- providing spiritual support; and
- social work oversight.
