Industries is all about giving prisoners the opportunity to gain skills and work experience to increase their chances of obtaining employment after release.

As a Catering Instructor with Waikeria Prison, you will be working with and providing direct supervision and practical training to the people in our care in a commercial kitchen setting.

From general meal preparation and delivery, to corporate catering, you will enable others to achieve NZQA qualifications linked to the ServiceIQ, the new ITO.

In providing a platform of good working habits to take forward to the future, you will further support rehabilitation and reintegration practices the support our aim to reduce offending and provide for safer communities whilst providing meaningful work and futures for the people in our care.

He kōrero mōu | About you

We would like to hear from you if you have:

  • A proven passion & practical experience in the Catering industry at a professional level
  • London City & Guilds 706/1 and 706/2 or equivalent trade qualifications
  • Experience working within a Kaupapa Maori or Pasifika environment, and /or demonstrates a willingness to learn about and operate effectively within cultural expectations
  • Outstanding Health and Safety practices
  • Exceptional people leadership and communication skills
  • The ability to motivate and develop people within a challenging team environment
  • A restricted or full NZ driver licence
  • The legal right to work in New Zealand for a minimum of no less than 18 months
  • The ability to pass a range of preemployment checks e.g. medical assessment, physical readiness assessment, drug test etc.
  • Experience as an Adult Educator or NZAQ Assessor is an advantage, along with a First Aid Certificate


Relevant industry experience in this field will also be considered and development support will be provided to assist you to obtain the required adult educator qualifications along with the Assessor Qualifications if needed.

Instructors have the same classification as Corrections Officers and, as such, complete the same initial training courses.

This will involve on-site training as well as residential training at our National Learning Centre in Upper Hutt, Wellington, to focus on the custodial elements of the position.

The hours of work will be on a rostered shift basis of 80 hours per fortnight. Public Holidays with the possibility of some overtime or callouts may be required and there is some seasonal work as would be expected in a farming envrionment
Utu ā-tau | Salary

The starting salary is $62,014 and once in the role we have 3 competency levels where you are able to increase your salary with the highest being $77,341.
