The purpose of the Classification Review Officer role is to provide information security and classification experience and expertise to review classified records.

This is a specialist role involved in reviewing a large volume of legacy material.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Reviewing classified records and making classification recommendations with reference to relevant legislation and information security policy and guidelines;
  • Consulting with information originators as appropriate;
  • Providing rationale for classification decisions;
  • Observing all relevant information security and classified document handling protocols; and
  • Providing statistics and reporting information on work stream progress and issues as required.
Ngā pūkenga me ngā wheako | Skills and Experience

You will have a working knowledge of the Official Information Act 1982 (OIA), the Privacy Act 2020 (PA) and Public Records Act 2005 (PRA).

As the Classification Review Officer, you will be responsible for reviewing and making recommendations on classified documents and information. You will have at least two years' recent experience in classifying information with regard to National Security classification requirements.

You will also have:

  • A strong people and customer focus;
  • A cando, problem solving attitude with a willingness to learn and deal with ambiguity;
  • The ability to effectively communicate with diverse range of people, from military to civilian;
  • The ability to assess information quickly and confident in making decisions in a fast paced environment;
  • Planning and organisational skills;
  • Proficient use of MS Office suite (advantageous);
  • Familiarity with SAP system (desired but not essential);
  • A relevant qualification, previous senior level military experience and/or equivalent work experience in classification of documents; and
  • Previous working knowledge of the OIA, PRA and PA.

- is a citizen of, and/or has resided continuously in one or more of the following countries for the last 10 years: either Australia, Canada, NZ, UK or the USA; and has a background history that is verifiable and can be assessed as appropriate by the NZSIS towards a recommendation of suitability for a security clearance at a higher level.
