We are looking for an Engineering Team Leader - Track to join and be part of our One Winning Team

The Engineering team have five core functions of Engineering Design, Engineering Advice, Long-Term Asset Management, Technical Standards, and Assurance.


As the
Engineering Team Leader - Track at KiwiRail, you will report to the Engineering Civil Sector Manager and be responsible for leading a skilled team of rail engineering professionals to effectively deliver major track projects.


You will also be a technical leader for the Track discipline, driving best practice Engineering and engaging at a strategic level with senior leadership, Technical Director and Professional Heads, and internal and external stakeholders.

The Engineering Team Leader will be expected to perform engineering tasks in line with their individual area of expertise, and to collaborate with the Track Engineering team to deliver our core functions.


Key responsibilities include:

  • Daytoday line management of direct reports (approximately 610 FTE).
  • Responsible for internal and external resource planning, management, and delivery of work in a manner which supports optimum service.
  • Provide technical leadership for Design Standards and Major Track Projects.
  • Provide technical leadership for Compliance of Track assets.
  • Drive innovation and efficiency in design solutions.
  • Lead and manage investigations and inspections on Track assets and the development of costeffective solutions for maintenance or renewal.
  • Work with the Professional Head to develop, implement and review technical documentation, specifications, standards and instructions that relate to design.

To be considered for this role you will have at least 5 plus years' experience in Track Engineering and/or Design and 3 plus years' experience in Project Management.

You will also have a relevant tertiary qualification with strong working knowledge of engineering fundamentals. You will be resilient and be comfortable with changing priorities.

To be successful, you will have:

  • Ability to foster and manage relationships with other teams and business groups.
  • Strong communication skills and confidence to resolve staff issues.
  • Rail industry experience, asset management knowledge and applicable experience within the track discipline is highly desirable.
  • Chartered with Engineering NZ is desirable.
