Embracing our Te Ao Māori principles, and initiating frameworks that correlate with our values, we provide a supported accommodation service for tāne who have been released from prison, who are at risk of being placed on remand, or at risk of being re-called back to prison.

Te Kaiwhakapumau's core responsibility is to promote and support the day-to-day management of our accommodation service. Based on a roster system, shifts are 24/7 and include weekends and over-night. Weekend shifts include providing external activities and excursions for tāne that will capture positive learning experiences and offer the opportunity for tāne to embrace new skills and perspectives.

Key components of this role include:

  • Working closely with tāne and supporting their journey to reach goals, and eventually transition into independent living.
  • Liaising with external agencies to provide specialist support and advocate on behalf of tāne when required.
  • Ensure systems and support structures are in place throughout every transition period for tāne.

Essentially, this role requires a highly experienced Support Worker who brings a strong understanding of Te Ao Māori and one who intuitively operates upon their foundation of kaupapa māori.

Further skills and experience to fulfil this role include:

  • A strong understanding of tikanga and kawa – ideally of Te Ati Awa and Ngati Toa.
  • Ability to communicate across different audiences including networks within our service, external service providers, and most essentially with tāne in our care and their whānau.
  • Established connections with local iwi, marae and community groups.
  • Understanding of Risk Assessment and Management frameworks
  • A clean and full NZ Drivers Licence.

The Rūnanga is a diverse and inclusive organisation positioned to understand and serve our communities. If you are looking for a position where you can make a real difference, we welcome your application.
