Te whiwhinga mahi | The Opportunity
Waikato Speech Language Therapy department has an exciting opportunity for a Speech language therapist to join our team.

The role will be predominately based in outpatient clinics at Waikato hospital, with possibly some rural clinics, providing assessment and management of communication and swallowing disorders for adults.

You will work within a close, fun team that provide speech language therapy services to adults and children across the Waikato region.

The speech language therapy team work in a variety of areas including inpatient medical and surgical wards, critical care, outpatient clinics, rural hospitals, inpatient rehab, child development centre and the cleft lip and palate clinic.

There may be opportunities to gain clinical experiences across these areas if interested.

Within outpatients a few examples of what we provide is below;

  • Head and neck oncology clinics in collaboration with dietitians to our Waikato population but also for Lakes and Tairawhiti regions
  • Fibreoptic Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallaowing (FEES) clinics
  • VFSS clinics
  • Joint ENT/SLT voice clinics
  • Close MDT working with max fax and plastics surgical patients
  • Parkinson's voice groups
  • Gender affirming voice work
  • Laryngoscopy clinics
  • Telehealth services

Mōu | About you

Required skills & experience you will need to be considered for this role:

  • Be eligible for NZSTA membership
  • Bachelors or Masters degree in Speech Language Therapy from an NZSTAaccredited programme; or have had your qualifications approved by the NZSTA
  • Have an openness to working within a multidisciplinary team working towards patient focused goals
  • Have a current valid full New Zealand drivers licence
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to provide a culturally safe service with Te Tiriti o Waitangi in the forefront of your practice and a focus on evidence based practice

Ideally you will also have:

  • At least two years' experience working with adults with acquired communication or swallowing disorders in a health or disability setting
  • Recent experience working with adults with acquired communication or swallowing disorders
  • Experience performing and interpreting videofluoroscopy swallowing studies
  • Experience with FEES
  • Experience working within a multidisciplinary team working towards patient focused goals
