Christchurch Art Gallery Te Puna o Waiwhetū is Christchurch's public art gallery in the heart of the city.

This is your opportunity to join an experienced, dedicated and hardworking team, in the largest art institution in the South Island, and home to one of New Zealand's most important public art collections.

We are currently seeking the crucial role of Lead Registrar.

Reporting directly to the Team Leader of Exhibitions and Collections you will be responsible for:

  • Leading the Registration team and the services that support the exhibitions and collections activities of the Gallery
  • Planning, organising and controlling the functional output of staff within your area to achieve results and outcomes that drive achievement of the Gallery's visions and key performance indicators
  • Keeping comprehensive records of the Gallery's collections and exhibition related activities which include overseeing the accessioning, cataloguing and maintenance of the collection database using Vernon CMS
  • Supporting the Team Leader to manage local, national, and international art consignments, and oversee the packing, handling, and security of artworks
  • Managing incoming and outgoing loans, whilst ensuring legal protection of the Gallery's collections through appropriate risk identification and management practices
  • Contributing to the development and implementation of policies and procedures relating to exhibitions, acquisitions and loans including the preparation of documentation and correspondence to comply with all legal, ethical and procedural requirements

Our ideal applicant will:

  • Have a recognised tertiary qualification equivalent to a Graduate Diploma or equivalent in Museums Studies or Collection Management
  • Have proven experience in managing a collection and using collection management systems (with Vernon experience being advantageous)
  • Be experienced in managing complex loans and collection transportation
  • Have excellent communication and people skills, with the ability to mentor and supervise staff
  • Be able to work in a fast paced environment within the whole Gallery team committed to reaching our collection and programming ambitions for our audiences
