Kā Waimaero | UC Māori

  • Fulltime at 37.5 hours per week (1.0 FTE)

What You Will Do
**The role of the Kaiurungi Matua is to lead the team to support ākonga Māori. This includes delivering successful pre-assessment and transition of students into first year tertiary study with a particular focus on year one undergraduate completion and retention, through to postgraduate study pathways. This position is also responsible for leading ākonga engagement initiatives that enhance the ākonga Māori experience to optimise their personal, social, cultural and academic success.

As Kaiurungi Matua, within Kā Waimaero | UC Māori team, this role will support the Pou Whakarae, Te Amokapua Maori Tuarua, and Kaiārahi Māori to develop and lead the implementation of the Māori student recruitment and retention strategy and operational plan.

The Kaiurungi Matua will lead and support UC's strategic intent to contribute to Māori and Indigenous development regionally, nationally and internationally and will support UC's commitment to develop graduating students who demonstrate bicultural and intercultural competence and confidence, to live and work in a bicultural Aotearoa and multicultural world.


Who You Are
To be successful in this role you will have excellent interpersonal skills to be able to engage successfully with a wide range of UC staff, diverse ākonga Māori, whānau, and other Māori community members including kura, iwi, rūnanga and organisations

You will also have:

  • Demonstrated mentoring capability and experience implementing and leading change.
  • Substantial experience working with students or customers from diverse backgrounds particularly Maori students, families, and communities.
  • Evidencebased understanding of the academic, social, and cultural needs of ākonga Māori
  • A commitment to enhancing bicultural competence and confidence
  • A recognition of Te Ao Ngāi Tūāhuriri values, tikanga (processes), kawa (rules) of cultural practice and traditions and valuing Te Reo Māori
