Overview:


This leadership role is the lead editorial decision maker for the creation of multi-platform content and ensuring our content reaches audiences across linear TV, digital and social on a daily basis.


Taking a content and audience-first approach, the Daily Editor will collaborate with key newsroom editorial leaders to prioritise stories for coverage and distribution.

The Daily Editor will ensure coverage across platforms and programmes to achieve Newshub's goal of being Kiwis' first choice for video news.


The Daily Editors will also have a content planning function, working with key stakeholders including bureau chiefs, bulletin and programme producers, reporters and digital producers to plan stories and coverage in advance where possible.


Responsibilities:

  • Responsibility for daily editorial decisions and prioritising which stories to cover, collaborating with 6pm Supervising Producers, Digital Shift Leaders, EP of Digital Bulletins and Future Audiences and Engagement Editor
  • Identifies the stories Newshub wants to 'win' from a videofirst perspective each day
  • Ensures news is being created and delivered with a 'video first' approach so that content can be broken up to be used across multiple platforms, including assigning angles for chasing and ensuring stories are presented in a balanced and diverse manner
  • The Daily Editor will have an excellent gut instinct for news and what our audiences want but will have a thirst for evolving the content experience based on digital/social audience feedback and data
  • Communicates updates on coverage and news about breaking events to the newsroom, including leaders of tv, digital and social platforms, with haste
  • Produce breaking news special as required
  • Be the key decision maker when it comes to prioritisation of resources, working closely with the Assignments and Deployment manager to ensure we're responsive to breaking & developing news, all while assessing performance metrics to help form current and future decisions.
  • Manage, coach and guide tv and digital reporters and producers as they deliver to teams across the newsroom and outputs
  • Ensure training and professional development opportunities are met for all direct reports
  • Recommend potential future Newshub talent for recruitment
  • Allocate resources and personnel to cover stories, by assessing effort involved, audience interest levels, and value to the Newshub news brand
  • Plan the next day's news events and stories by ensuring daily prospects are sent out to key newsroom personnel in advance, including ensuring coverage plans are done and shared and determining resource allocation
  • Communicate metrics and learnings from a combination of sources to help form collaborative thinking across platforms and audience targets
  • Contribute to the daily morning newsroom meeting, representing what Auckland is delivering from a tv/digital perspective
  • Run the afternoon editorial meeting, ensuring everyone is aware of the day's news stories and prospects for the following day
  • Throughout the day, work alongside all content endpoints to ensure they are represented and considered and to ensure their needs are being met
  • Be a sounding board for editorial direction and ideas, sub scripts where required and implement coverage plans
  • Be available to assist digital shift leaders to subedit and allocate stories, as required
  • Be available to assist TV bulletins to write VOs, and produce stories, as required
  • Together with the Director of Future Audiences and Engagement, monitor performance of stories online digital and social and feed information around the newsroom
  • Refer up to Director of News Gathering and Director of TV Bulletins for significant spend on deployments and logistics
  • Refer up as required on legal risk to the Newsroom, individuals or the business
  • Manage and run individual 'special events' as required
  • Lead breaking news coverage with deployment advice and direction including ensuring health and safety risk assessments are completed and reviewed by the Director of News Gathering
  • Always conduct oneself in a professional manner when representing Newshub and the wider business
  • The Employee shall ensure they are familiar with the Employer's health and safety policies and procedures, and any modifications to those policies and procedures that may be introduced from time to time.
