Mō tēnei tūranga | About this role

We are looking for a Speech-language therapist to work with a local team of educators to provide services and supports with the education sector in Tararua.

You will join a team of passionate educators who with you will create a bespoke service model that meets the needs of this rural community.

This is a unique opportunity to be a key professional in developing a new tailored service.

You will be supported by a Manager of Integrated Services, and the integrated team which includes learning support and education professionals based in Tararua, Wairarapa and Upper Hutt, a network of other speech-language therapists and by our Wellington region practice team.

The Ministry is building a new team of professionals to work alongside the education sector in the Tararua district in the North Island of New Zealand.

The district has a large farming (cattle and dairy) community, 21 schools, 1 Kura, 23 Early learning centres including 4 Kōhanga Reo and an active Rural Education Activities Programme ( REAP).

The Tararua district has a population of almost 20,000 and offers an abundance of outdoor activities for a keen applicant.

The Tararua ranges are nearby and an outstanding variety of tramping, hunting, and walking opportunities in a wild natural landscape.

The districts biggest towns are Dannevirke, Woodville and Pahiatua.

Mōhou ake | About you

You will demonstrate knowledge of, or a willingness to gain an understanding of Te Ao Māori and promote tikanga and Te Reo Māori.

You will also have knowledge of, or a willingness to gain an appreciation of te Tiriti o Waitangi (the Treaty of Waitangi) as it applies in the public sector.


To be successful you will need:

  • A Bachelor's or Master's degree in Speech-Language Therapy or an equivalent that meets the requirements of the New Zealand Speech-language Therapists Association
  • Specialist knowledge of theory, research and practice related to speechlanguage, child and human development, and learning and behaviour.
  • Ability to translate specialist knowledge into practical information.
  • Ability to coordinate service provision in a multiagency, transdisciplinary setting
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills and an ability to work effectively with children, young people and their families and teachers across a diverse range of settings.
  • A full New Zealand Driver's license as travel within the Tararua/Wairarapadistrict is a requirement of this role.

At Te Tāhuhu o te Mātauranga, we work to provide services and support nationally, regionally and locally to the education sector, and in some cases, directly to ākonga and whanau.

To better deliver on this, we are currently undergoing an organisational design change. The transition phase to improve the way we deliver our purpose will be complete in 2023.
