Ara Creative Industries aim to provide a stimulating, industry-integrated environment that enables a diversity of learners to communicate, collaborate and innovate within a range of creative and cultural contexts.

Our tutors work in partnership with support staff and services in immersive, flexible and work-based environments.

The department encompasses over 70 staff and 800 learners in Art & Design, Broadcasting, Performing Arts, and Music Arts and includes a range of nationally recognised industry-focused programmes including two post-graduate programmes in Creative Practice.

The Performing Arts area includes the National Academy of Singing and Dramatic Art (NASDA) and Music Arts.

Performing Arts delivers the Bachelor of Performing Arts and NZ Certificate in Performing Arts (NASDA) and the Bachelor of Music Arts and NZ Certificate in Music (Music Arts).

This position is shared between NASDA and Music Arts.

The Performing Arts Technician will work alongside other Creative Industries Technicians to support staff and students to meet learning/ teaching needs.

The Performing Arts Technician will assist the manager, programme leaders and Operation Coordinator to implement systems and processes that allow for efficient operation of programmes within Performing Arts.


This role involves workload planning, resource allocation, coordination and implementation of production / performance projects, budget monitoring and ensuring exemplary health and safety practices.

The role has an operational focus.

Skills/Experience

  • A tertiary qualification at degree level in an appropriate discipline and/or relevant experience in performing arts and/or technician roles is desirable.
  • Significant production management skills and experience in a wide range of performing arts, including theatre and live music.
  • Experience working with young people in an educational setting, preferably tertiary.
  • Strong planning and organisational skills with attention to detail and follow through to achieve an outcome.
