Emerge Aotearoa is a committed Tangata Tiriti organisation and a national provider of a variety of services in mental health, addiction, disability, well-being, and housing, including contracts with Corrections and Oranga Tamariki.

He kōrero mō te tūranga | The Role
The roles are based at our residential Youth service in Blockhouse Bay. We work with Oranga Tamariki to provide accommodation and support to rangatahi with high and Intensive support needs. Each rangatahi comes with their own story and ambitions.

Our team has a common goal - to provide a safe environment where young people can realise their potential and feel empowered to make positive decisions in their lives.


We want to create a safe and homely environment for tamariki/rangatahi, where they are supported to attend school, learn life skills, and live as independently as possible within the community.

You and the team ensure our rangitahi feel cared for, safe, and have the support in place to strive to be the best that they can be.

Being a constant through the good times and the tough days, we steer the waka together and restore mana and create independence.

Focusing on strengths using proven strategies, supporting our rangitahi to achieve their goals.

Duties of the roles include:

  • Encouraging school attendance, and other prosocial community activities
  • Supporting our rangitahi in completing activities of daily living
  • Cooking dinner meals and encouraging the rangitahi to be involved where appropriate
  • Providing medication support for rangitahi who are taking prescribed medication
  • Communicating with other stakeholders as necessary including police, and Oranga Tamariki


The hours of work are rostered Monday to Sunday and shifts include 8.00 am to 4.30 pm, 4.00 pm to 12.30 am, and 12.00 am to 8.30 am.

You'll be energetic, fun, a great listener, able to respond calmly in challenging situations, and excited to see rangatahi succeed and make positive changes in their lives.

You'll have a talent for seeing the potential in people and thrive in a challenging and ever-changing environment.

You'll also need:

  • A sound understanding of traumainformed care
  • A full NZ driver's license
  • Experience working with youth/rangatahi and/or a healthrelated qualification.
  • Good time management and organisational skills
  • Be culturally responsive and nonjudgemental
  • Have strong professional boundaries
  • Can easily build professional relationships with people
  • Experience with deescalation from intense situations
