The Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu nomination and appointment process is being undertaken to appoint a Ngāi Tahu representative to the University of Canterbury Council.


Functions of the University of Canterbury Council

  • To appoint a chief executive (Vice-Chancellor).
  • To influence and approve the strategy, investment plan, business plan and budget.
  • To ensure the institution's strategy is aligned with the tertiary Education Strategy (TES).
  • To ensure the University works towards Māori achieving educational development aspirations.
  • Comply with the relevant statutory requirements.

Purpose of the role

The purpose of this role is to represent the Ngāi Tahu perspective to the University of Canterbury Council ensuring that any issues of tribal significance are reported to Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu while also ensuring that tribal matters of significance are represented to the Council.


Required skills, experience and qualifications
The appointee to have relevant knowledge, skills or experience to undertake the duties of Council, preferably in several of the following areas:

  • Strategic planning/governance
  • Business acumen/financial management
  • Employment environment
  • Performance improvement
  • Tertiary education
  • Community links, in particular a strong connection to Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu.

Meeting details

Meetings will be held monthly February to November, from 3.00pm on the last Wednesday of the month at University of Canterbury.

Additional meetings and workshops may be scheduled for particular purposes. Remuneration of $20,000 per annum.
