The Commercial Director is a key member of the Transport Infrastructure Delivery team reporting to the GM on the Senior Leadership team and is responsible for contractual, financial and risk management within the business.


The Commercial Director will provide the necessary direction and leadership to ensure the following:

  • Sound commercial, financial, contractual and business practices are applied to all Transport operations consistent with the Downer Standard.
  • Support management to deliver profitable operations.
  • Contribute to the development and growth of the business and implementation of strategy.
  • Maximisation of sustained business profitability.
  • Ensure stakeholders' relationships are enhanced and effective.
  • Risks and opportunities are understood and managed.
  • The continuing professional development of our quantity surveyors and other commercial resources.
  • Commercial acumen is embedded and improved within the businesses. Contract estimating is consistent and provides for sustainable growth.
The role, along with the wider team will work seamlessly across the business implementing and facilitating business improvement initiatives.

It will identify best practice and develop standardised practices that will become common across the Transport with a strong focus on sustainable business improvement.


The role is responsible for:

  • Leading and managing a team of quantity surveyors and estimators.
  • Providing commercial, contractual and risk management expertise to improve business performance.
  • Ensuring sound financial and business practices are applied to all Operations consistent with the Downer Standard.
  • Promoting consistency and accuracy with regards to forecasting, cashflow and managing the commercial position.

The following outcomes will be achieved:

  • Sustainable business profitability.
  • Implementation of business strategies.
  • Increased commercial, contractual and risk awareness within the business.
  • Ensuring customer and stakeholder relationships are professional and proactively managed so they are enhanced and effective.
  • Increased predictability on project financial outcomes.
  • Downer's contractual entitlement is maximised whilst minimising costs.

About you:

Qualifications and Experience

  • Hold a relevant tertiary qualification or equivalent, e.g. BSc, RICS, NZCQS, law or equivalent.
  • Have 15 years plus experience in a Commercial Manager role, preferably with contractors predominantly operating within the Transport sector.
  • It is essential to have experience of providing management support in the construction or infrastructure sectors.
  • Proven experience of dispute avoidance and/or resolution.
  • Excellent people leadership skills including a total commitment to creating a Zero Harm workplace.
  • Ability to negotiate effectively.
  • Welldeveloped written and verbal communication skills.
  • Financial and commercial acumen.
  • The ability to work under pressure in a fully integrated team environment.
  • A strong customer focus including the ability to identify project solutions that add customer value and deliver return straight to the bottom line.
  • High analytical skills and competency with Excel and Risk management Software.
