Te Tūranga - The opportunity:


A journalism opportunity inspired by veteran Māori broadcaster Henare te Ua (Ngāti Porou) and recognises his outstanding contribution to broadcasting and journalism.

RNZ established the Henare te Ua Māori Journalism Internship in 2017 to provide training and development pathways for Māori wanting to pursue a career in journalism.


Since its inception, the programme has fostered the talent of aspiring young Māori journalists through providing invaluable practical experience and dedicated support.

Many of our previous ika tauhou / interns have transitioned to fulltime roles at RNZ and other media outlets across the country and overseas.


RNZ is New Zealand's only independent and commercial-free public multimedia organisation and exists to serve the public interest by providing impartial and balanced journalism for our audiences.


We are committed to celebrating and nurturing the talent of aspiring Māori journalists who are passionate about sharing the authentic voices and stories of te ao Māori.

The paid 12-month internship, open to Māori graduates who are passionate about journalism, aims to ensure there is a continual pathway of promising journalists from all backgrounds entering the industry.


Te Mahi - About the job:
You will get the opportunity to work right across the RNZ business including:

  • Working alongside RNZ news staff researching, reporting, writing and presenting news and current affairs stories.
  • Learn about the inner workings of RNZ with the goal of producing Māori content for all RNZ platforms in particular onair and online.
  • Identifying & suggesting, developing and writing stories, radio copy, scripts and content for various RNZ programmes and online sites.
  • Recording and editing audio and visual content for use in programmes, bulletins and news stories.
  • Developing and maintaining a list of media contacts.
  • Learning onair production, interviewing, presentation, sound quality techniques.
  • Undertaking training from the Māori News Editor, and collaborating with a range of other departments and senior staff across RNZ.

Ōu Pūkenga - About You:

  • Tertiary qualification in Journalism.
  • A strong understanding of te reo and tikanga Māori.
  • Good writing, multimedia, radio, visual and social media skills.
  • A knowledge of digital editing techniques desirable.
  • Existing knowledge and experience and a commitment to giving effect to Te Tiriti o Waitangi and tikanga.
