You will be joining one of the largest global dams teams, working collaboratively with over 200 dams engineers on a diverse range of projects to deliver innovative and reliable solutions for our clients across all industry sectors.

We have roles available for Senior Engineers, Lead Engineers and Technical Directors - Dams and /or Hydropower, with your primary role being to:

  • Provide technical leadership in dams and hydro and pumped storage design projects within New Zealand, Australia and North America.
  • Support our local and international clients to manage the safety of their dams and hydropower asset portfolios.
  • Build and maintain key client relationships to develop a sustainable dams, hydro and pumped hydro energy storage capability in New Zealand.
  • Secure project opportunities and deliver successful outcomes that will grow the team.
  • Build GHD's profile in dams, hydro power and pumped hydro energy storage.


You will succeed by exhibiting technical leadership at a senior level, active participation in client relationship management, business development and the development of proposals and technical reports.

Your leadership will be demonstrated through achieving on time and on budget project completion as well as mentoring and developing other team members.


Experience required:

  • 5 years to more than 15 years' experience in dams, hydro power and pumped hydro energy storage engineering with the majority of this time working as a consultant
  • Established industry profile through participation in professional associations
  • Demonstrated skills and understanding of dam design for large dam and hydropower structures
  • Detailed knowledge of design of a broad range of dam types, dam safety and risk assessments and construction phase experience.
  • Experience working in multidisciplined teams, including geologists, structural engineers, hydraulic engineers, hydromechanical and electromechanical engineers across both jurisdictions and time zones.
  • Authoritative technical leadership in the design of large dams, hydro power and pumped hydro energy storage facilities.
  • Successful development and growth of strong client relationships
  • Established project and time management skills, including preparation of budgets, work programs, proposals, tenders, technical submissions and reports.
  • Established project team management skills in a multidisciplinary consulting environment
  • Clear and persuasive written and verbal communication skills in English along with an ability to work well with a variety of clients.
  • Ability to grow a team and provide mentoring of junior staff.
  • A commitment to maintaining a healthy and safe workplace.
  • Strong knowledge of relevant New Zealand and Australian standards, industry guidelines and current hydro and pumped hydro energy storage industry practices

What we expect of you:

  • Providing specialised technical services to clients on a diverse range of dam and hydrorelated projects including feasibility studies, design and construction support for new build and improvement projects
  • A willingness to travel both nationally and internationally as required for projects,
  • Well regarded dams and hydropower design advice during client tendering and evaluation of tenders and where required design advice and quality control during construction
  • Completion of tasks for multiple projects within budget, to committed programs to support the timely completion of projects
  • Contribution to the preparation of successful proposals to clients
  • Ongoing compliance with GHD's Quality, Environmental Management and Occupational Health Safety & Rehabilitation Systems
  • Clear, concise reports and presentations for clients
  • Industry recognition as leader in the field of dams and hydropower engineering
  • Active development of GHD's dams and hydropower business
  • Build effective relationships within GHD including with Business Group Managers, Client Relationship Managers, Market Leaders, Service Line Leaders and other key people

Qualifications:

  • CPEng, CMEngNZ
  • Post graduate qualifications will be favorably regarded
