This role will assist the Regional River Manager and Team Leader Land Rivers Coastal in efficiently managing and maintaining flood control and river schemes, drainage networks, pumping stations, and coastal protection works. You will focus on supporting the region's recovery from recent weather events, such as Cyclone Gabrielle. You will lead and provide expertise to ensure the successful delivery of various Flood Scheme Resilience Improvements projects, meeting quality standards, budget, and deadlines.

Responsibilities include technical advisory, procurement and contract management, and stakeholder management and communications.

Your role reports to the Regional River Manager, and you will be working within the Rivers team of about 6 people.

This role is based in Gisborne.

You'll recognise the importance of the role as a Treaty partner and understand how that underpins Gisborne District Council's work.

Duties include

  • Provide engineering advice and assessments, identifying emerging risks, opportunities, and strategies.
  • Lead the design, and implementation of flood and erosion risk reduction and enhancement projects.
  • Oversee assigned projects from planning, detailed design, and procurement through to completion, ensuring delivery according to GDC processes and systems.
  • Manage contractors and consultants and contribute to the engineering design of Flood Resilience Improvements and other projects.
  • Provide guidance and leadership, training and development, and performance appraisals for Construction Engineer (direct report).
  • Undertake stakeholder consultations, ensure all assigned projects have agreed and approved communication plans in place prior to construction commencing.

Skills and experience required

  • 5 years project management experience
  • Bachelor of Engineering, Civil Engineering, Engineering Technology, Earth Science or Environmental Engineering.
  • An understanding of the local government sector.
  • Strong leadership and management skills with the ability to drive and influence outcomes.
  • Solution focus and analytical problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent planning and organisational skills with the ability to manage projects to timeframes and budget.
