The Role and Opportunity

The Laboratory Technician will be working in the Rumen Microbiology Team, supporting multiple research projects through various stages. You will be performing experiments and procedures both in the field or laboratory, which will involve a range of research tests and techniques, including data analysis and reporting.

What You will be Doing

You will show initiative and original thinking in relation to problem solving or modification of methods as required when testing is at a higher complexity level, with tasks including routine analysis testing involving more than one processing stage. Your experience in independently conducting technical duties such as planning, data collection, research analysis and reporting of results will be invaluable.
You will be using scientific methodologies for all research, including literature searching; hypothesisbased experimental design and statistical analysis; and following rigorous development and documentation procedures for research protocols. You will have the flexibility to accommodate experiments that may require tasks to be carried out outside of normal working hours from timetotime (e.g., weekends).

Your ideal background

Relevant tertiary qualification such as a Diploma, Bachelor's, or master's qualification.
At least two years technical experience and/or one year of practical work towards a MSc or equivalent research degree.
Proven track record of implementing an assigned research product/product plan.
Ability to work without direct supervision as and when required.
Experience in microbiology, preferably working with anaerobic bacteria.
Working knowledge of the cultivation, harvesting and analysis of fermentation end products of bacterial cultures and the extraction of DNA and RNA and subsequent analysis.
Experience working in an environment that requires an understanding of Health & Safety requirements when handling materials and substances that may be hazardous.
