Mount Victoria, Wellington, New Zealand Buddle Findlay Full time

What's on offer

An opportunity for a senior solicitor to work in a niche and in-demand area of law as part of a national team at Buddle Findlay.

On offer is a top-tier law firm salary and benefits, flexible working options and exceptional career development opportunities.

In addition to that, you will work in a vibrant and dynamic team who supports each other to deliver their best work together.

The opportunity
A rare vacancy is available in our market leading Financial Services Regulation team (FSR).

This team is split across Auckland and Wellington and works very closely with the Christchurch FSR team as well, so you will be joining a truly national practice.

There will be opportunities to travel to Auckland to collaborate with team members based there.

This role is unique in New Zealand's FSR landscape because it has a core focus on payments law and advising the payments industry in New Zealand and the Pacific.

New Zealand's payments industry is currently experiencing significant development, for example in relation to the implementation of the Financial Markets Infrastructure Act 2021, Retail Payment Systems Act 2022 and the upcoming consumer data right (
CDR ).

In addition, the industry is undertaking several significant industry-led developments such as ongoing work to develop an industry-led open banking solution in tandem with the CDR and real-time payments capability.

The role

You will have the opportunity to work closely with New Zealand's leading payments lawyer according to Legal500, Simon Jensen, who provides strategic advice to the industry in the development of New Zealand's payments system, as well as the payments systems of Pacific nations.

You will also work with partner Scott Abel, senior associate Emma Geard and several other lawyers in the broader financial services team.

Additionally, this role will enable you to support the FSR team in advising on the full range of financial services regulation matters, and in particular in relation to:

  • Prudential regulation of financial institutions (banks and non-bank deposit takers);
  • Advising clients in New Zealand's payments industry (eg card issuers, acquirers, initiators, acceptors, aggregators, managed services, agency arrangements, exchange settlement accounts, government banking, etc);
  • Buy-Now Pay Later CCCFA regulation;
  • Climaterelated financial disclosures;
  • Conduct regulation of offerors of financial products under an FMC offer;
  • Anti-Money Laundering and Counter Financing of Terrorism Act 2009;
  • Consumer finance; and/or Supporting the provision of corporate advice to financial institutions in relation to certain mergers, acquisitions and other deals.

Our team is also regularly asked by clients to present to boards on strategic issues in relation to corporate governance and the full spectrum of financial service regulation, so there will also be opportunities to contribute to and participate in delivering advice to all levels of our clients and understand how their businesses work.

What matters to us
We are looking for a bright, focused and ambitious solicitor to join our team.

To be successful in this role, you will ideally have:

  • Four or more years post admission experience in either financial services regulatory, banking, corporate, commercial or a related field of legal practice
  • A genuine interest and enthusiasm to build a career and refine your skills in financial services regulation and the payments industry
  • Strong academic ability, with a willingness to tackle complex issues and the ability to think critically
  • Experience or an interest in corporate law, privacy, and data security The ability to learn quickly, work with others seamlessly and draft to a high degree of quality.
