Ōnuku Rūnanga is the modern-day representative of the hapū Ngāi Tārewa and Ngāti Irakēhu, with our marae based at Ōnuku, along the shore of Akaroa Harbour.

Being one of the 18 Papatipu Rūnanga of Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu, Ōnuku as collective governance rights and responsibilities of the Iwi.

Ōnuku Rūnanga vision is to hold rangatiratanga across our takiwā to:

  • have an ecologically vibrant takiwā that is holistically cared for by Ōnuku kaitiaki
- ensure our whanau achieve their absolute wellbeing (health, education, justice, wealth)
- have a culturally rich and thriving marae, hapū and whānau
- be financially successful (Rūnanga and whānau)
- have traditional communities for whānau to live and thrive within
- have a contemporary, vitalised marae that honours our whakapapa and meets the needs of whānau and manuhiri

You will be the key to designing and implementing kai sustainability in whānau homes.

Working with whānau and a small team that strives for success, you will be a highly motivated individual that can work independently and collaborate well with whānau and our small team.

A vital member of the team for our He Kākano programme, our whānau want to take individual action for climate change resilience, and māra kai supports kai sovereignty for our whānau.


Our Kaimāra Coach will enjoy a varied workstream and be flexible with the many demands that working for mana whenua brings.

Being in a small team, our Kaimāra Coach will share a passion for meaningful mahi, be willing to problem solve and have manaaki as the centre of their mahi.

Our team takes pride in the mahi we do for the benefit of all Ōnuku whānui.

Our Kaimāra Coach will bring resilience and knowledge and a whānau centred approach, utlising whānau ora modalities to support whānau on their journey to kai sovereignty.

Ōnuku Administration Office, located in West Christchurch, provides core administrative and policy support to Ōnuku Rūnanga.

The Kaimāra Coach role is primarily based at our Office, with regular trips to Ōnuku and visiting whānau at their homes.

This role is a 0.25FTE (part-time, flexible working hours).

A good understanding of papatipu rūnanga communities, māra kai experience and mātauranga Māori is an advantage for any applicant.
