Te āhuatunga a Te Kooti Whenua Māori/About the Māori Land Court
We are a court of record.

Te Ture Whenua Māori Act 1993 (our Act) recognises the significance of Māori land as a taonga tuku iho of special significance to the Māori people.

Our role is to provide a court service for owners of Māori land, their whānau and their hapū which promotes the retention and use of Māori land; and facilitates the occupation, development and use of that land.


The record held by Te Kooti Whenua Māori is taonga tuku iho and the Court is the guardian of the whakapapa of the land, which is the people.

We currently have a vacancy in our Tairāwhiti Māori Land Court office in Gisborne.

Our Pae Tohutohu are technical advisors responsible for supporting managers and frontline staff to deliver justice services in the Māori Land Court.

He pūkenga tou/Skills and Experience

To be successful in the role you will:

  • Have operational management experience, preferably in a customer service environment
  • Support frontline staff to ensure customers receive consistent information and quality service in every interaction with the Ministry
  • Work with teams/groups of staff to provide training in particular areas of expertise
  • Support managers to respond to customer issues
  • Provide technical support and advice to assist with processing, compliance with standardised procedures and effective delivery of services to customers
  • Contribute to a positive team culture that enables the high performance of the immediate team and organisation
  • Promote and support staff to establish an environment of consistent practices and procedures to maintain a customer service culture across all service delivery activities
  • Collaborate with managers and other technical advisors to ensure advice is consistent and fit for purpose
  • Extensive working experience with Te Ture Whenua Māori Act 1993 and related legislation
  • A good general knowledge of, and respect for, tikanga Māori and a commitment to further develop your knowledge of Te Reo Māori


You will work within a well-established, experienced and vibrant team locally and nationally, and you'll be flexible, calm, resilient and in no way daunted by the court environment.

Salary Range
The appointing salary for this role will be between $77,128 and $93,658 based on skills and experience.
