Genetic Health Service NZ - Northern Hub is part of Te Pūriri o Te Ora Regional Cancer and Blood Service, based at Auckland City Hospital, is one of three Hubs of the national genetic service.

The Northern Hub provides Genetic care for the region covering Tarawhiti to Northland. The core team consists of 5 Geneticists and 8 Genetic Counsellors.


The service provides prenatal, general and cancer genetic counselling care through education, information and support to individuals, families/Whānau and other agencies.

As part of our multidisciplinary team you'll manage a caseload of general and cancer cases. You will be responsible for providing coordinated, efficient and quality genetic counselling service to patients and Whānau.

Some key accountabilities, dependant on experience, include:

  • Determine the patients understanding of referral and give information on genetic mechanisms
  • Record family pedigrees clearly and legibly.
  • Participate in intake phone calls with patients
  • Gather clinical information, family consent and laboratory information as required by Geneticists and Senior Genetic Counsellors.
  • Accurately elicit the questions/advice by the patient and by the referrer.
  • Accurately prepare clinical letters, documenting issues, outcomes and recommendations arising from the consultation. Ability to refer to other specialties where needed.
  • Organise genetic testing
  • Obtain documentation to confirm family history or diagnosis details where necessary. Obtain informed consent for genetic testing/release of information to
- ensure patients and/or family agree with proposed management where necessary

Nga Pūkenga Motuhake | Important Skills
To be successful in this role you will have

  • Excellent written, oral and interpersonal communication skills are essential.
  • Master in Genetic Counselling
  • MHGSA or eligible to join the Australian Society of Genetic Counsellors register
