We have a fantastic opportunity for an expert in sample and collections management and processing with aspiring or experienced people leadership to join us managing a team of six, who are responsible for the end-to-end processing of data and samples from the programmes including the National Tier 1 Biodiversity Monitoring Programme.


The Team Lead, Sample Management carries out a pivotal thought leadership role in regard to our sample processing and management, and the related data and information from these and supporting systems.


You will be seen as a technical specialist in samples and collections management handling and processing methods and will be responsible for maintaining, improving, and developing new management protocols across a range of sample types.

You will work with Principals, team members and external agencies to ensure implementation of international best practices.


As Team Leader, you will be the workstream lead, ensuring the skills of the team are fit for purpose and the workload is both feasible and deliverable and your team maintain the quality of outputs required by the national monitoring and reporting system.

You will provide a supportive and approachable leadership environment that encourages the team to be and do their best. You'll nurture this ethos through effective and timely development conversations and monthly catch-ups with team members.

This includes the training and supervision of workstream members, and reporting used for DOC's Monitoring and Reporting System.

Key responsibilities of the role include:

  • Supervision of staff and interns.
  • Leading and managing the endtoend processing for samples.
  • Auditing and reporting on quality controls.
  • Provide specialist sample collection and management advice.
  • Provide advice on the design and implementation of new samples and collections management and supporting information systems.
  • Support and encourage ongoing professional development within your team.

He kōrero mōu | What we are looking for

  • Graduate Systematics, Biology or Ecology qualification or equivalent.
  • Commands peer group recognition within sample and collections management, taxonomic systems and standards, the identification and curation of samples. Has experience and achievement in endtoend process. design and management of technical work.
  • Demonstrates strong communication skills to produce technical outputs and advice to a very high professional standard.
  • Current full driving licence required.
  • A relevant qualification in biology or the natural sciences sector is desirable.
  • Knowledge of and practical experience in vegetation monitoring methods.
  • Experience in curation with herbaria.
This is a new permanent role at 40 hours per week. The role will be based at our Mahaanui office in Sockburn, Christchurch.
